Default How to stream media using BlackBerry device via WiFi network connection [with pics]

As we all know with the current leaked OS7.1 releases, a very cool new feature has also been released.

You can now stream files straight from your BlackBerry device via Wi-Fi (Media Server) wireless connection

How cool is this feature from BlackBerry?

RIM has been working together with (DLNA) Digital Living Network Alliance , through their dedicated hard work to make this feature available to these leaked operating systems.

We now have proof that this feature works and is now available for BlackBerry Bold, Torch, and Curve devices, for OS7.1 owners.

I'm sure other BlackBerry OS7 devices will be able to receive this feature on future leaked OS7.1 builds.

I have posted several actual pictures from my BlackBerry Bold 9900, so I may show everyone on how to get this feature working successfully on their BlackBerry device.

To find your BlackBerry device on your Windows based PC, click on Network.

On your BlackBerry device, scroll right down to "Media Options", and click on File Sharing.

Once you click On File Sharing, you will see "Turning File Sharing On"

Click on Preferences, here is where you will have the choice of turning on "Media File Permissions"

You will have the choice of sharing Music, Pictures, Podcasts, Videos, and/or Voice Notes.

Click on Edit, here is where you will Enter a name for this device, "Name of Device", then click Ok.

Note: you may keep the default "Name of Device" if you wish.

Click on the back button now.

This is Access Control screen, where you will observe your Wi-Fi wireless network SSID name, and choose whether you want to "Auto Accept All Connections", or not.

If you choose not to "Auto Accept All Connections", then you can choose to manually accept any connection, (Prompt, Always Allow, or Never Allow).

"File Sharing is OFF" this picture shows that File Sharing has been turned off via the Access Control screen.

When File Sharing is on through the "DLNA" feature, you can stream any file from your BlackBerry device, via WMP (Windows Media Player), as I have posted below for all members.

If you have any further suggestions, or comments relating to this OS7.1 feature, please post below so other members can share and learn from each other.

    Thank you.

Great write up. I did everything correctly but when I double click on my phone in the Network, it opens up Windows Media Player but doesn't show anything

It simply takes me to My Music (music on my PC) and I can't figure anyway to access my phone's files... any ideas?

    Thank you AgentBlackBerry

When you go on your Network, Open Media Player.

When you go on WMP, click on Stream, scroll down to "Automatically allow my devices to play my media", then restart WMP.

    That should do it.

Hypoxia Media player is a fantastic solution for media streaming on OS6 devices.

Hypoxia - Network Assistant can stream audio, and video* from your BlackBerry smartphone using your home's WiFi network.

*Torch 9800 and Bold 9700 owners enjoy the added feature of Streaming Video from the network. (More phones to be added).

I take it this only works for these OS6 devices - BlackBerry Torch 9800 & BlackBerry Bold 9700

Would you like to confirm with me this info I have posted above, adperdue.

Just video streaming is restricted for OS6. Let me contact Chad, I'll find out if he has any new info.

Thank you adperdue, I would be grateful if you can, so I can share with other OS6 BlackBerry users if they need something like this in the future.

Great write up. I started playing with this yesterday after upgrading my 9900 with 7.1.0.267 by trying to stream through my Blue Ray player. It could see my BB and access the folders but no matter what type of file I tried it kept reporting the same error, "unsupported media format". I was pleasantly surprised to find access and media streaming fully supported with WMP on my Windows computer though. It worked perfectly, though just a wee bit strange serving my music from a phone to a Windows PC, it's usually the other way round.

Thank you rjedge54 for the compliment, as you know already, we can stream and access our files via a DLNA feature from the PC to our BlackBerry devices using WiFi, but as you know BlackBerry devices cannot stream Blu-Ray files.

This is the reason why you were not successful through your Blu-Ray player.
