How to convert video to MP4 with Handbrake

Handbrake 0.9.3

Settings

Picture Settings Tab
Format: mp4
width: 480
height: blank
anamorphic: none
no detelecine, no decomb, no deinterlace, no denoise

Video Tab
video codec: h.264
framerate: same as source
yes 2-pass, yes turbo first
avg bit rate: 500

Audio & Subtitles
audio codec: AAC
stereo
auto
64kbps

Advanced
1 reference frame
0 b frames
motion estimation method: uneven-multi hex
motion estimation range: 16
subpixel motion: 6
analysis: all
8x8 DCT: no
no fast-p-skip: checked
no DCT-decimate: unchecked
CABAC entropy: unchecked

Click preset, new preset, name it, and settings will be saved.

Choose a destination for the MP4.
Choose the source of the video file.

In this example I have IronMan.avi to be converted to an MP4.

Click START and wait for it to finish!!!

Nice.. And this is just a backup(cough cough) of you original copy in your dvd library...lol.. I use Xilisoft MP4 to convert mine over, but most of mine are 650 to 800 MB. Backups (cough cough) of my original library. lol

Does handbrake work well with HD file types such as MKV's ??? i have a lot of HD movies in mkv format and it seems no matter what BS conversion program i use i still get crappy mp4s.

I have not done any with mkv, but there is an mkv in the drop down box in output settings.(see above pic where it shows mp4)

Try it out if you like and report back. I would love to hear your findings...

I never had any luck converting MKV's. But, I haven't tried them with handbrake yet.

Ya the dmg istalled with no issues but its taking a long time to convert still 38min to go

yea, that is the same for me, takes me about 2 hrs for a 2 hr movie

ok so its done and i played it on the storm, quality is great although I would like a bigger image. The image runs through side to side, but the top and bottom are dark, image is shown only in the middle of the screen can I fix it in the settings or is it just the format of this movie??

The ones I have played were full screen...I don't see any options but will see if there is an answer for this.

It has to do with the aspect ratio. My bet is that your original source is a wide screen source. You could edit the height, but you would distort the video. The only thing you could do to get a full screen with original resolution is crop the width, but you loose the wide screen view.
