No idea what Verizon is planning with this but reading this makes a lot of sense. The airport thing would allow Verizon to off load the data onto a lesser expensive connection for them while providing a faster experience for the consumer also a huge perk if it is only available to broadband and adv dev subscribers or maybe they will just offer it to all VZW subscribers as a benefit to having VZW (doubtful). Freeing up bandwidth for voice calls will be a huge benefit for Verizon. As far as launching more phone with WiFi... makes sense to me. Now that all T-Mobile, ATT, Sprint and VZW all require data packages on new smart phones it makes sense to off WiFi as it allows the carriers to reduce network congestion while allowing the consumer to increase their connection speed.
As far as why they are the last to open this up... well I think its actually thought of backwards. Of course in the past Tmo and ATT where going to make sure their phones had WiFi in them since the connection speeds and high speed coverage areas where no where near Sprint and Verizon's coverage and speeds. So they ensured their phones had the WiFi. Now that having WiFi is becoming a touchy spot and some consumers think its Verizon just being a bully of course Verizon is going to push for more WiFi devices.
I don't think it was Verizon trying to sell their data plans since they covered that issue by requiring a data package! So does everyone else now too.
