Thread: Any old Tmo users that made the switch to Verizon?

And if so, did you regret the switch?
I'm getting tired of the spotty tmo coverage and the lack of 3g.
Thinking about coming over to Verizon in the near future, to experience a blackberry in 3G(specifically Storm 2) from the current unlocked storm 2G spotty signal experience I'm going through now.

What are your opinions guys?

No regrets at all.

I made the switch in New Hampshire and dropped calls have significantly decreased from frequently to very few.

I just read that Verizon's 3G isnt really like Tmobile's 3G, where you can talk on phone and send/receive email, browse the internet all at the same time?
Can this be confirmed?

Correct... CDMA is the limitation though not VZW.,... any CDMA carrier is unable to do similtanous voice and data... unlike GSM which can, but CDMA can be faster and have more users on a single tower... bot have their advantages but in the end in my book CDMA is the way to go.

I am in Los Angeles and switched from TMO to Verizon about 8 months ago and I would never go back, coverage is amazing and I hadly ever get dropped calls. However it is true that you cannot surf the net or send e-mails and text message while on a call, but tht is not a deal breaker to me, hell when I swiched TMO 3G ws pretty much non-existent.

actually you can send and recieve text while on the phone just not pictures

First i may happen to work for the largest CDMA carrier in the us...cough cough , second the spotty coverage and long term moves of gsm are not going to be as great as CDMA... in the end CDMA can benifit more people for less than GSM can. The biggest benifit for me is the towers dont get overloaded like gsm...when you have low signal on gsm its because the closest tower to you may be 'full' so you will connect to the next closest and avaible tower. with cdma it takes ALOT to 'fill' a tower, and typically the transitions between towers is smoother than gsm. I hope this helps.

I am not on TMO, but on AT&T and I can't wait until September 1st to switch to VZW. I am getting tired of the drop calls, slow EDGE network (which AT&T has said they are making EDGE slower so users will upgrade to 3G).

It doesn't matter whether you are on TMO or AT&T, both use GSM, even for 3G.

When qualcomm developed CDMA technology everyone was certain this was going to bell standard worldwide. What happened though is the carriers did not want to be tied to a chip manufacturer. CDMA is for more robust and advanced than GSM for good reason.

Every cell phone provider whether it's CDMA or GSM use what are called Gateway or so called "Trunks". What this does is compress the amount of into a single pass through so the carriers can handle as many calls through one cell tower. This is where CDMA has a significant advantage. CDMA technology can compress many more cell phone signals than GSM can. Therefore, a company like vzw only has to use one cell tower where AT&T and TMO would need multiple ones for the same amount of cell signals.

1 CDMA trunk can compress 1,000 lines into one without loosing the integrity of the call. GSM trunks can only handle 100.

There a number of other advantages but just pointing out why CDMA is the more superior technology to GSM.

That's great info J, never knew those facts. I love behind the scenes facts and stuff. One day I'd like to see a tower up close in person.
