Thread: Verizon: Only our app store on smartphones

Verizon is up to another dastardly way to make money. This time by limiting where you buy your applications from. GigaOm, VP Partner Management Ryan Hughes said in an interview the Verizon branded app shop will have content for all major platforms under the same roof.

This means that Verizon won't have the BlackBerry app world on it when a customer purchases a BlackBerry. The customer would need to take the time to actually download and install the BlackBerry app world.

Why am I not surprised with that. Verizon does have a way of making things a little more difficult than things need to be.

If Verizon's app store is easier for developers to get onto, allows for simple billing to your Verizon account then so what. You can easily add any other app store you want. I personally shop at MobiHand, but I won't reinstall their app store until it becomes more user friendly.

This is no more vile or insidious than APPLE's friggin app store. That is a closed platform and network with Apple holding the right to decide yes, no or remote kill of an app you paid for because they say so. Now I accepted that for my iTouch but never on a phone.

I will just hide the stupid Verizon app store icon if it sucks (likely a service books push anyways). I shop at MobiHand and will continue to do so (also via their affiliate program here.) but their app store for the BB, sucks. It needs work, it needs features, it needs to be less bloat. Until RIM gives us at least 256MB+ of app memory I won't install any bloated store apps when I can just browse via the web.

it doesnt, if you havent noticed they already stopped pushing out appworld, and no vzw store, as of right now from what I am getting...vzw has 0 compatible apps, and they are going to be much higher priced

Well the My VZW for the Storm works well. Other than that they can keep thier app store

i think engadget really tried to make verizon a bad guy in this. i mean look at some of the facts, RIM is verizons biggest partner in this, Jim Balsillie was a big speaker at the verizon depeloper conference today and started out saying he was always a supporter of the style of app store verizon is undertaking. Also, this undertaking prompted rim to release new developer tools (although i cant say if they had panned on it already or not). Verizon is also releasing api's and sdk's for more incorporated apps upon their network.

verizons policys for app approval (at max 14 days) and a guarenteed 70% profit for the developers i can see alot of good coming from this app store, not that i dont think rims wont improve, i just think it if anything, verizons will be a nice resource for new apps. they also will have a webpage storefront as rim is adding in its new release.

a big thing about this store however is that it supports many operating systems, as microsoft and palm are talking partnerships much like RIM's as well as the regular "vcast" phones will have apps in the store.

you have to remember these arent "verizon" apps anymore they are developer apps just like any other app store.

Yeah all the articles I had seen up until this week didn't make any mention that RIM had any involvement in this.

lol yea i did notice that, only reason i did find out was when i looked at the schedule signing up for the webcast. im converting everything i got to a video format if anyone would want to see it

its really good look at where apps are going or at least where the companies want them to go and the new things they are being allowed to access and change

Its really no different than apples appstore, someone just needs to develop a jailbreak program and offer an alternative such as Cydia and it won't be an issue.

they did say however that by thursday they should have all the videos on their site Verizon Developer Community so im pondering just waiting for them to be there, that way it is better quality and no missing the first part lol

You are right, Apples has their phone so locked down that the FCC is now looking at their app approval process and how GoogleVoice was denied (timely given Eric Schmidt leaving the board). Besides I am sure we can delete the stupid app store much like we do with Shrink an OS when the time comes, right Lyricidal.

I do have to say this, and this is more of a vzw internal miscommunitcation. I was talking with someone the other day, and the meetings they have about data sales they are still pushing the sales people to tell people about how great blackberry app world is...I said word for word "What the f***, do you even know that we are NOT pushing this out anymore?"

Trying to explain that was like pulling teeth, why would you tell a customer about something that they have to find and download on their own any how is beyond me... thats just my 2 cents though
