Verizon Wants LTE ASAP
BOSTON -- Verizon Wireless CTO Tony Melone says that it is in his company's best interest to move to nationwide LTE as soon as possible and cut the pricing of mobile data services along the way, but that the operator is unlikely to stop CDMA-based voice services before 2018 at the earliest.

I think the game plan is to launch LTE sometime in early 2010 with Data only first followed by Voice quickly thereafter. Supposedly, there will only be two initial test market cities with it rapidly expanding to dozens more major metropolitan areas thereafter.
It will mean SIM cards finally will be in major use at Big Red for the LTE phones. I'm hoping one of those early LTE phones will be an LTE Iphone.
I'm really happy it is finally happening. The UMTS goal of an all "IP" based software architecture will ultimately mean much better world wide standards.
