Thread: Push To Talk - PUSHED!

Earlier tonight, we reported the availability of Verizon's new Push To Talk (PTT) service, but were unable to confirm it would "cooperate" with existing devices. Well, now we can. A special thank you to forum member mule0331 for this perfect screen grab of the application center in action on his wife's Tour 9630.

Is everyone else receiving the update? Chime in and let us know if you've used the service or the app!

So.... I'm not the smartest guy on the block but is the to allow you to use your BB or any other device as a PTT phone? Kinda like the good ole days of NexTel?

Yep, it works pretty good. I've used VZW's PTT on other phones, but not the BB yet. Hope it gets pushed to the Storms soon.

I hope I can get this on the 9530. I would love this feature!

I shrunk out Application Center when I loaded 5.0.0.548, as I always do when I load a new O/S. So I don't know if it was pushed to my phone or not. I don't think I would use it anyway. I have a problem with Verizon charging me an extra $5 per line to use it, I would think the $250+ that I give them every month should have been sufficient to line all their pockets. Secondly, I see way to many people everyday carrying on conversations, usually at an elevated volume, in an inappropriate location, and about a topic that the rest of us don't want to hear!

I did the same thing. And when I try to use shrink a os and put the app center back on it does not work. Guess I will have to wipe and reload the OS grrrr.. As for the $5 charge. I think that is mos def. worth it. If you think about it $5 for unlimited Talk time is decent IMO...

Any Idea if his wife is using official OS or not?? Cuz I am not seeing it in my girlfriends Tour but she is running 5.0

I cant remember which 5.0 leak I put on her phone. I would check, but shes at work right now. I guess thats what happens when you have 2 berrys in the house and change OS's more than underwear, lol.

lol we do the samething around here as well. I was just curious if she was running 4.7 still (thank god she isn't). I hope this gets pushed to the S2!!!

Maybe they are pushing it out area by area. I have 2 other friends with Tours, running variously different OS's, and they all got the pushed update. I'm in the Cleveland Ohio area.

Problem is if you read Verizon's fine print, both parties need a Verizon number for PTT to work. Verizon Cell to Cell is already free. If you both have a Verizon number you already have unlimited free calling and you did not have to pay an extra $5 per line, nor are you sharing your conversation with everyone who is within a hundred feet of where you are talking. hone:

You are absolutely correct. Your John Wayne Quote is perfect for that scenario I am calling myself out on that one lol. I actually thought about that after I posted it. Not only do they need to have a VZW number but I am pretty sure they have to have PTT service as well. In my case my girlfriend is pregnant and we are on an employee acct. so it's only $5 for both of our lines. I think this would make things easier for her to get ahold of me if she needed too. At the same time I loved this feature with nextel and hope that it gets pushed to the 9550 as well. Note she has yet to receive the update in app center yet as well.

I had Nextel and PTT for a while years ago when I worked in construction and that was one of the few scenarios that I thought it was handy, but I'll agree to disagree.
Congratulations on the baby though! Few years from now we'll have a new CrackBerry addict on here!

just another way for verizon to try and make money. this push to talk application should be free though. it wasnt extra with nextel....

LOL. I have a yr old daughter and she is already started to play with the BB. That's putting it in her mouth and drooling all over it ... Hope this one is a boy. Thanks for the Congrats it's appreciated..
