Duplicate Application Text on Home Screen

Though I've got lots of years of graphics experience, I'm a total newbie to theme development. I downloaded and installed Plazmic, the patch, and also simulators for 9630 and the 8330. I started out with their basic Zen template, and the only change I made was to put the same background image on both the Home and App screens. It exports fine, loads to the Tour fine, but there is one issue that is completely stumping me. When I hover over any of the icons, the application name shows up as it should - but if there are new messages in the message folder, or new notifications in Facebook, I get duplicate application name right on top of the first one. I get the 'usual' text that says 'Messages', but also a line of text stacked on top if it that says 'Messages (2)' or however many messages there are. Does anybody know what I need to do to solve this? Tried twice with same results. This only happens on the Home screen; the Applications screen is fine. Thanks in advance!
