Welcome to BBOS. I think you may be missing a step. Haven't done this myself so I can't say for certain.

I've tried to do it step by step several times, but the problem seems to be that device folders are read-only. I've even tried to unlock them for editing with file manager pro, but the phone doesn't allow me to do so.
If there is a way to add several folder icons (other than default one) over plazmic theme bulder, or if there is another theme builder available, any advice would be much appreciated.

..try it using BBFileScout; IIRC I had similar issues before switching to BBFileScout file manager.
i get this error message "net.rim.device.api.io.file.fileioexception [file not found]"...........any ideas?
I don't know.. maybe restricted by the IT dep't or OS version ???
if i cant solve it, imma just blame VZW.........i hate them
still can't get this to work....must have a mental issue!
could be another 191 thing. i did this on a previous os but can't do it now.on another note...the custom folders i made carried over to my new os when using the stock theme but when i use a custom theme and try to change the folder icons my custom ones aren't available. i have checked the folder and they are still there just not accessible with a custom theme.
I get an error message while trying to move or copy the PNG files to the Folder Icon Dir: store/samples/folder icons/. The Error States: "net.rim.device.api.io.file.FilelOException [File not found]"
I'm guessing the Icon folder is protected, is there a way to unlock it?
If anyone knows how please help.
Thank you,

RIM has managed to block file scout from modifying the system directories... I haven't been able to get this to work on the last few OS releases for my 9530.
..perhaps there is another filemanager that still works for this?
My curve 8530, OS 5.0.0.654 and the previous OS does not have a folder icon file. When I attempt to add a directory to the store/samples or store/system/samples folder I get the following error - net.rim.device.api.io.file.FILEIOException [File system error (12)]. I have not been able to add my folder icons to this phone. I can't change or add to the bland/generic default folders. Other than that the phone is great. Does anyone know the work around so I can personlize my BB folders?
with OS 5.0 introduction this option was killed, reason according to RIM is to keep the device's security
can someone please update if it can be done for BB Torch
As far as I can find, there is not a way to do it. Hopefully someone can correct me.
