Thread: Creating a Theme with Weatherbug Slot

I have created several "themes" (New icons, and backgrounds), and am now ready to move on to some more advanced themes.

I have a theme with 4 icons on the bottom on the Home Screen, and in the top right a place for another icon (weatherbug). I did all this in the Theme builder, and not composer.

My question is when I place the weatherbug app in the 5th position, all that shows up is the ladybug with the temp in it... not the nice conditions icons, like I see on other themes.

So what is the trick? Is this done with a SVG file from composer? Or can it be done in the Theme builder?

I searched and searched for this and cannot find any videos or tutorials anywhere.

I place it using theme builder but I make it slot #1. I don't think that would make a difference. Have you done a batt put on the device its installed on? Sometimes mine stick on the default icon until I do that. Also the simulator will always show the WB icon.
Also, are you setting the home screen icons in order by application hierarchy or by selecting the box marked application order?

Yes, I have pulled the battery, same results.

In the Zen properties, I have Use Device Application Order checked. Under Applications, I have Render Home Screen Over Banner Checked.

This is on the phone, btw, and not the simulator. I don't have much luck with the simulator. When I try to run the sim from the Theme builder, I get an error to Reload the OS on the simulator screen. So I have to export the theme as an ALX file and copy that into the simulator folder to be able to test any themes.

Forgive me because I'm not at a computer for exact directions. I would recommend creating the theme as a custom and create a zen like theme from there, more options are available. Honestly I'm not sure if the weatherbug will work right in the zen template. In the zen template inspector pane the third option down (I think) is where you assign properties for the icons. There you will see a checkbox you can select use application order. It may not be there in the zen version, again forgive me for being away from a computer right now.

What I did was load my Windows 7 theme, save it as another filename, then changed the type to Custom.

Do you think it's not working because I started the theme as one type and changed mid design?

I will give that a go... This is the Weatherbug Direct app we are talking about, right? it just occurred to me that I may have the wrong app.

I've used berryweather and weathereye and both work the same. If there is a different version to try that might be the easy way.

I would download the weatherbug app from the blackberry app world. You have to set up a location to get the conditions icon to show up. Changing to a custom theme mid design won't hurt anything at all.

Well, now I feel stupid... I had the wrong WeatherBug application.

While Im thinking about it... is there a way to capture a screen shot on the phone itself?

I don't think I can get the weatherbug app to run via the simulator to get some screen captures.

Also what is the color depth the backgrounds should be? I got my windows 7 background from my laptop and used CB's wallpaper creator to get it sized correctly, but the image looks a bit washed out.

Any ideas?

For screenshots you can use Quicklaunch or Capture it. Get Capture It HERE OTA

Getting weatherbug to run on the simulator is tricky. You have to install the Blackberry JDE and the Blackberry Email & MDS Service Simulators. I would stick with QL or Capture it.

For the backgrounds I use 8 bit to keep the filesize down.

I downloaded the CaptureIt... pretty sweet app. Will lower the backgrounds to 8bit, currently they are 24bit.

They are great aren't they... I really appreciate their help.

This 9530 is the first smart phone I have ever owned. I really wanted an iPhone, but I will not leave Verizon.

In Feb, I jumped on their buy a storm get any other blackberry free. So I got 2 Storms. Now my wife cannot say I always get the better phone.... even though she always gets the better car, but that's another story.

Getting the storm despite all the bad reviews was the BEST decision I made. I just sold my iPod Touch because I can do everything on my storm that I could on the touch. Well except for the wi-fi <sigh>.

The second best decision was to quit going to CrackerBerry and start asking questions here instead. The people here are VERY helpful, and you don't get flamed for being a noob.
