I'm with ice and agent here. I'd rather have a butt kicking OS rather than a pretty theme.

A theme can sometime enhance the performance of the phone, it doesn't have to be pretty, though it helps, like a theme based on PS3 like hedgestone or the zen theme. I would like an app that would give easy access to all my day's and/or week's event. Although, i cant deny the need of a better OS for 9900 that would really help with battery life.
Also, as shallow as this may sound, RIM can only attract new customers if they make the device more customizable. As a student, there is no denying the need of "showing off" the phone. The more themes, the more the app developers can show off their talents. there are a bunch of things i don't like such as the ability to create my own panels. themes are not always about looks, they are about functionality. With a company like RIM, that has intense pressure from shareholders, there is a dire need to increase demand in market that demands looks yet expects and values great functionality. And themes provide a balance between the two.
