SVG Files

I'm forging down the path of creating .svg files. I have went through some tutorials on other sites but they always seem to be missing a step or reference a location or function but do not say where or what that is. Does anyone have a handy resource for a beginner as my first attempts have been unfruitful. I really am looking to do a hidden bottom dock and am good at reverse engineering this kind of stuff, anyone out there that can lend a hand?
