Appears HSPA on Telus is to launch October 28th?

Appears that HSPA on Telus is getting really close to launch....as the following image was sent as a sneak peek to an e-learning course that is required for ALL employees!!!

With previous rumors/info floating around (BBOS thread: http://www.blackberryos.com/forums/t...eady-hspa.html), now we know for sure it's coming and coming fast....It's a soft roll out and Telus is running this in parallel with 1XEV. Current BlackBerry's are not ready to go with the flow and will not work on HSPA.... What are your thoughts on this? Could this be the reason for missing devices on the Telus website? What improvements will this bring? And how will Telus line up with other carriers?

The whole race to HSPA is a sham ,Bell and Telus have teamed up to bring HSPA to Canada so really their is no race, Bell owns most of Telus' towers in rural areas and just rents to Telus.

This is why in areas where Bell is REALLY good, Telus will suck because Bell doesn't want to give up that stake.

As for HSPA devices, even when launched they can advertise whatever speed they want, it's all theoretical speed based on measurements done in testing environments, no device on the market will ever see it.

Marketing ploys just like when 3G launched, 3G never was 3G...3G was launched and in actuality it was technically 2.5G but they still sold everyone on 3G.

I agree with you about the sham part but you have your carriers crossed Telus is the "parent" company owns the cell towers. Yes they have partnered. Telus has given Bell more rural coverage on cell towers in exchange for the new Telus satellite tv.

Your correct about the 3G comment. Telus/Bell's first phase of HSPA is in fact a 3.5G network. The full 4G or LTE network is scheduled to launch in early 2010. The goal is to have it up and running in the Vancouver area at first for the Olympics. (Febuary 2010).

This is why none of the current Blackberries will be compatible with this new short term 3.5 network. The device set to launch in 2010 will be compatible with the 4G network.

Telus's position right or wrong is that the 3.5G and the current 1XEV are very close and because it's a stepping stone to 4G(LTE) they will not be releasing devices that are compatible with the short term HSPA.

All the new devices released after 2010 will be 4G(LTE) devices. So reading between the lines here I'm assuming that the 9550 will not be HSPA compatible either.


As fustrating as this news is for myself as a Telus customer who invested in 2 devices that were HSPA ready when I bought them are now in fact not HSPA ready. Telus's 1XEV is a very solid network and as fellow telus customers I'm sure will agree with me that a bad day on telus is still better then a good day on Rogers :lmao:

I don't think your right, I thought that Telus was rolling out hspa for a starting point to the lte move that will happen a couple years from now ie 2012.

by devices not being compatable it just means that storm 1 tour so on so forth don't operate on 8xx and 1900 bands so they wont work with Telus hspa

Could you explain please. I think there is a lot of confusion regarding these terms.

3G = 364 KBPS connection
HSDPA (also called 3.5G) = 1.5 = 3 MBPS connection
Right now, the only AT&T devices to support HSDPA 7.2 are their Mercury and Quicksilver broadband USB modems for PCs

Early deployments of the service will be at speeds much lower than the theoretically possible rates. Early service will be at 1.8 Mbps, with upgrades to 3.6Mbps as devices are made available that can handle that increased speed.

Currently the handsets I am aware of are, Europe the Samsung SGH-Z560 and BenQ-Siemens EF91, USA the Samsung ZX20.

With Telus Rolling out their HSPA this soon looks like I will be calling into loyalty and seeing what we can work out. I am going to be going into my 3rd Tour in as many months, so I think negotiating with them will be fairly easy...all I need is a sim. I got a couple devices on hand that I will be tinkering around with to see what the network is like.

Very exciting news! I know of someone who is testing the network with a Nokia N9X sucks that he did not get a BB. But still is very promising. Because at Telus the future is friendly!
