Default AT&T Cracking Down on Tethering and Hotspot Usage

Enjoy your free tethering while you still got it AT&T subscribers. According to multiple reports AT&T is cracking down on customers that have used their unlimited data plans to tether other devices or share them as hotspots. PlayBook owners will be affected by this because many users that currently can use their PlayBook's browser while connected to the BlackBerry Bridge might not be able to do so in the near future.

As of August 11th, AT&T users in general will no longer be able to tether from their devices for free and will instead be automatically upgraded to a tethering plan without even approving of one if they are caught tethering.

Earlier this year, we began sending letters, emails, and text messages to a small number of smartphone customers who use their devices for tethering but aren’t on our required tethering plan. Our goal here is fairness for all of our customers. (This impacts a only small percentage of our smartphone customer base.)

    The letters outline three choices:

    1) Stop tethering and keep their current plan (including grandfathered unlimited plan)

    2) Proactively call AT&T or visit our stores and move to the required tethering plan

    3) Do nothing and we’ll go ahead and add the tethering plan on their behalf — after the dated noted in their customer notification
Let the uproar begin. The question I want answered is, why is AT&T the only company that's having such problems with tethering? When in doubt, blame the iPhone.

This is crap and the public will voice their outcry!
I wonder how they would even monitor this or if there is a way around this...

All devices have a unique identifier that can be monitored, and they also look at spikes in data for each member. Basically they are watching us.
