Perhaps AT&T should sue themselves for having shitty service!
Alltel was a CDMA carrier not GSM

Your second edit is correct sir lol yea alltel started out as GSM I thought/believe they sold off their gsm towers that they didnt revamp as CDMA, but dont quote me on that.

I didn't mean to cause any heated debate on the subject, I was just saying that I wondered when debate on these commercials would come up. As I stated before, yes it's true that AT&T does NOT have 3G in the white areas, but they do have EDGE, which in my experience, is equivalent to Verizon 3G speeds.

Appears, this topic is turning into heated discussion
Everyone, please stay respectful and no bashing....just a final friendly reminder...but on a serious note
Okay, Alltel actually started as a landline company... LOL.
They started their wireless division and eventually branched off. Way back when they started there wasn't GSM or CDMA... they were always a CDMA carrier, but installed GSM functionality on their towers, because it made great business sense. Alltel didn't make their money off their customer base. They made their money off the carriers paying roaming fees (The biggest reason why VZW wanted them). Alltel actually had a great GSM network throughout rural America and this is why AT&T is soooo upset, and another reason why everyone keeps reading about "divested markets."
Alltel built out their towers to support both CDMA and GSM networks... great idea, right?
Either way, the network started analog... then TDMA, then CDMA/GSM (which is actually the same technologies just configured a little bit differently on how the packets are transferred over the air). CDMA is actually a safer, more efficiently ran network, but GSM was a better early solution for data and voice combinations.
Either way, AT&T is losing ground, because VZW cut them out from under by buying the network they relied on.... the same network everyone relied on, ha.
