Hey Beta Zone users App World has received another update. This one actually has quite a few updates, take a look at them here:

    • Sleek New Design - The BlackBerry App World experience has been enhanced to help you discover the latest and greatest apps and content, starting right on the BlackBerry App World home screen where rotating spotlight banners show off all that’s new and exciting.
    • New Channels - Apps, Games, and Themes now have their own channels so you can get to what you want even faster. Each channel offers up a whole range of Categories, Top Lists (for Paid, Free, Rated, New Arrivals) and a Search Bar.
    • Introduction of My Account - My Account makes managing your BBID and payment options easy with direct access to all of your account information from the home screen.
    • New My World Features - My World gives you a streamlined view of all your apps and their status, and now at a glance, in addition to seeing which apps are installed and uninstalled, you can manage your subscription content and services. When new updates or subscription renewals are available for your apps, you’ll be notified using push technology.
    • App Social Sharing - When you find an app you can’t live without, share it with your contacts directly from the app details screen through BBM, Facebook, Twitter, email and SMS.
    • Evolved App Details Screen - At a glance, you can get a quick summary, check out reviews and star ratings, take a look at screen shots, and more.
    • More Search Options - Quickly find apps with a Search Bar now appearing on the storefront home screen and search results are presented across Channels as well as My World. Search Bars are also within each Channel and users have the ability to filter by App Name, Price, Rating, Newest, Best Match, or Popular.

Head on over to the Zone, and start updating. Let us us know your findings.

Just when all the excitement over RIM's new BBX platform seems to have peaked, RIM has been struck with yet another lawsuit. This time it is in direct relation to the BBX name. BASIS International a global software company, promptly took legal action after RIM's press release about the BBX name stating that the name is causing great confusion with in its world wide customer base.

In an official statment ASIS Chairman and CEO, Nico Spence, said,
“We have thousands of product licenses installed worldwide with the ‘BBX’ prefix that run on Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, and other proprietary UNIX OSs from IBM, Hewlett-Packard, and SUN, with mobile clients running Apple iOS, Google Android, and Windows Mobile. We are fielding numerous customer inquiries voicing their confusion about the RIM announcement.”
    It seems as though RIM never took the time to review the current trademarks. The ironic part here is that Spence also states the following;
“Ironically, BASIS’ BBx may aid RIM in its quest to grab a share of the application market for mobile devices in that any application created with BASIS’ BBx for the Android or iOS mobile devices will also run on BlackBerry products.”
RIM has release the following statement regarding the issue:
“RIM has not yet received a copy of the legal complaint described in Basis International’s press release, but we do not believe the marks are confusing, particularly since our respective companies are in different lines of business."
Who would have thought this early in the game that RIM would be facing legal problems. We will keep you posted on this as it unfolds. I wonder what the new name will be if they have to change it. What do you think it should be called?

Perhaps the biggest news from yesterday festivities at BlackBerry DevCon 2011, was the announcement of the PlayBook OS 2.0. Version 2.0.0.3778 to be exact offers quite a few improvements, and changes over the current 1.0.7.3312 version. It's seems just like it was yesterday that many of you were affected by RIMpocalypse.

As mentioned earlier this week, RIM has partnered with several app developers to provide FREE premium apps as a compensation for the outage.

The first developer to bring the offer/promotion to App World is iSpeech with their DriveSafe.ly Pro app. Typically a $19.99 USD value, the app is FREE for a limited time.

DriveSafe.ly 2.0 speaks txt (SMS) and email messages aloud so you can concentrate on the road. Eliminate temptation to drive distracted-let DriveSafe.ly read txts (texts) and respond by voice with Pro.

In the excitement of the first day of BlackBerry Devcon 2011, several announcements were made today. One of the best announcements we seen today was a BlackBerry Jam, a central location where developers will be able to find a large selection of developers resources.

    • Jamming is innovating together - Build and innovative on the BlackBerry® Application Platform in your development language of choice.
    • Jamming is collaborating together - Connect with experts, partners and the broader community to be more successful on the BlackBerry platform.
    • Jamming is creating success together - Get help to go to market, be more profitable and build your business.
I don't quite think the name fits the typical BlackBerry branding, but quirky name aside, this will be a great place for new & veteran developers to grow in the BlackBerry development knowledge.

What a wild day we are having in the BlackBerry world. It seems as though the Beta Zone users are getting some love from RIM as well. Earlier we reported that the eBay app for BlackBerry was updated, and now there is even more great news. Scoreloop SDK has been made available in the Beta Zone.

Scoreloop provides everything you need to add social elements to any game. From developers to brands, operators and OEMs, Scoreloop’s social gaming ecosystem and SDK creates instant communities and connections, and new ways to generate revenues from mobile games.
At this time its looks as though there are no downloads available, but I suspect they should start appearing real soon. So once again head on over to the Beta Zone and start updating.

If you've opened up App World today you may have noticed a new featured selection labeled "A Thank You Gift." Yep, RIM is prepping App World for the free app frenzy to take place tomorrow for all BlackBerry users. These apps will be available to download until the end of 2011 so that will give you plenty of time to get your app on. What's the catch? Depending on your device, some of the free premium apps will not be available to you. Of course this is normal as one wouldn't expect to run N.O.V.A. by Gamloft on the old clunky 8300. Yesterday we reported a evolving list of apps that will be included in the gift pack, amongst one month free of tech support for Enterprise users.

We've heard in the past about the stardom of Obama's BlackBerry. Anything from Obama's BlackBerry being hacked, to having a special encrypted 8830, and also showing off his new BlackBerry to the leaders of England and France. No denying that Obama's BlackBerry has been at the center of attention more-so than any other smartphone of a US President. However, this time around it's not so positive for Obama's BlackBerry as it is being requested by Congress as part of a ongoing investigation into the Obama Administration's knowledge of the Solyndra company. Solyndra is a solar company that the Obama administration propped up as one of the great successes of Green Energy jobs, which received a $535 million loan guarantee from the federal government only to go bankrupt shortly after with more than 1,000 employees out of a job.

What do you think? Should Obama allow the transparency his administration espouses and let investigators inquire into his BlackBerry's emails? Should he even have a choice as an elected official? Remember to keep it clean and fun!

BBX To Leapfrog The Competition, Says RIM Co-CEO Jim Balsillie

We have know for a while now that RIM has been working on their next generation BlackBerry OS called BBX. However, we were still unsure of its real name, and what exactly it would be capable of. So like many we have been patiently waiting for more information regarding BBX. Needless to say, we were very excited to hear the latest news regarding the BBX platform.
In an interview with the Financial Post RIMs Co-CEO Jim Balsillie, said a few interesting things. The first thing he said and probably the most important thing, was the name of BBX. According to the FP, BBX is what Balsillie said would bring RIM back in to the spot light. The second thing that Balsillie said that really got everyone excited was what he said regarding tomorrows DevCon.

We’ve leapfrogged everyone with what we’re announcing [on Tuesday] and you’re going to see it on display,
Balsillie also commented on RIM's history.

We built an engine back in the mid-90s that served us incredibly well for 15 years, and in the past couple of years, we’ve had to build the engine of the future while still driving the engine we’ve got.”
“We’ve completely had to re-engineer ourselves for the future,”
These were actually two very profound statements. The first statement is the whole reason why BlackBerry is what it is today, because it was built such on a solid engine. The second statement is profound because it address the questions we as consumers have been asking for months, like why cant RIM move past the same old devices and software, and Why cant RIM's upper management get this. Well apparently they do as they have completely re-engineered themselves for the future. Things are looking better for RIM.
We are all really excited about what tomorrows DevCon has to offer. We will keep you posted through out the day so stay tuned for more new.
