Another BlackBerry rap tune emerges on YouTube. This one doesn't have as much swagg as the SwaggBerry song, but still focuses around BBM. How about it, more swagg or less, in you Berry rap tunes?

Foursquare for BlackBerry has been updated to v1.9.97. With the update comes new features because of a recent partnership with American Express. Now the partnership is going national. Across the whole country, at select merchants, you can now check-in with foursquare, pay with your American Express card, and get big savings on your monthly statement.

    It’s simple to use:

    • link your AmEx and foursquare accounts (you can do it here);
    • check in at a participating store and tap ‘load to card’ on the Special; and,
    • pay with your AmEx card.

There’s no cutting out coupons or showing your phone to the cashier. The savings are automatically credited to your account within a few days.

RIM's future is about as uncertain as it can get. For many regular BlackBerry users this doesn't really affect their daily lives as, worst case scenario if BlackBerry dies out, they could simply move on and get a new phone with a new company. For some us though, the thought of our beloved Canadian-based cellphone manufacturer going under is a super depressing one.

None of us want to even think BlackBerry could just disappear and that we'd have to decide between getting an Android, Windows 7, webOs phone or iPhone. But with all the negative publicity RIM has been getting these last couple of weeks, one can't help but wonder what the future holds for BlackBerry. Will we ever see the QNX-based OS we've been promised? Will RIM get a new CEO(s) that might want to take BlackBerry in a different direction? Will RIM be bought out by another company (Google, Apple, Microsoft, HP)?

While we have no way of knowing what a specific person taking over the CEO role could do to improve a company, we can guess and hypothesize what a merger with another giant could bring to the table for us BlackBerry users. That's why this last question presents to me the most interesting scenario worth debating. Could a merger work?

Originally, I was going to concentrate on covering all this information in one article. Half an hour into it I realized it would be nearly impossible so I decided to divide this editorial into three parts. Here is Part I. Please forgive me for what I'm about to write.

The Google Mobile Search app has been updated to v3.9.8. No presence of a change log, but it's always good to get updated to the latest version. Could just be the routine bug fixes. Download and let us know if you notice anything different.

RIM has started to hand out layoff notices after it said on Friday it would cut an unspecified number of jobs, a local newspaper said on Tuesday. But, so far officials from the Canadian company could not be reached immediately to confirm the report in the Waterloo Region Record, which serves the Ontario city where RIM is headquartered. The report gave no specific numbers on the layoff notices, but noted that RIM employs about 17,500 workers globally, including 9,000 in the Waterloo region. Are you one of the many being affected by the RIM layoffs?

Joy of Tech, a comic about technology and pop culture, takes another shot at RIM in their latest piece. The comic draws upon the recent criticism that RIM has drawn from investors to split up the CEO position that is shared between Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis.

The last time Joy of Tech took a shot at RIM was when Mike Lazaridis stopped an interview when asked about negative reviews of the PlayBook.

What are your thoughts? Does this comic accurately reflect the situation going on with RIM's upper management?

The popular Twitter app UberSocial (once known as UberTwitter) has been updated with a wealth of changes today! Version 1.20 includes the following changes:
    • The Inner Circle - Users have asked us how best to manage their busy timelines and we believe this feature will greatly assist in this. The Inner Circle allows you to elevate the most important users you follow to an exclusive timeline. You can set separate notifications on tweets/replies/DMs from anyone in the Inner Circle as well as separate icon notifications.
    • DealBox - This new feature will allow you to get offers on the best deals near you and customized for you. A small, passive notification will appear in the top right of the title bar to let you know if there are any new deals available. For users that have subscriptions, we have turned this feature off by default, but you can turn it on if you choose in the options screen.
    • Support for Twitter's new authentication mechanism for third-party clients - When you first install UberSocial you will be asked to go through the login process again, this is required in order to maintain compliance with Twitter's access mechanism.
    • Support for photos sent with Twitter's new photo service
    • Enhanced image viewing - For users on BlackBerry OS 5 and 6 you will now use the built-in image viewer to zoom and pan avatars and images. You can also now email these images from both places.
    • Unfollowing UberSocial from within the UberSocial application will now turn off auto-following of UberSocial if it was still on
    • A long click on a tweet on BlackBerry OS 6 devices will now bring up the menu
    • High quality photographs - You can now send original and higher quality images when sending a picture to Lockerz - you have the choice of small, medium and original, note that medium and original sizes will take longer to upload, but will be of higher/highest quality.
    • Fixed a bug with older BlackBerry OS 4.7 devices that had trouble loading UberSocial
    • Changed the name of the client attribution to 'UberSocial for BlackBerry'
    • Removed all umlauts over the U's in UberSocial
    • Reverse geo-location will now use BlackBerry's service and if that isn't available Twitter's reverse geo service
    • Fixed bug where users avatars which had transparency would not be maintained when added to the UberBar
    • Fixed bug where you sometimes could not select a location for trending topics
    • Fixed bug where a users avatar which is in the Uber Bar would not be loaded
    • Fixed the Facebook login bug - note that if you have set your facebook device to require the naming of each device that logs in, this is still an issue.

From the BlackBerry World 2011 conference, David Heit, Director of Software Product Strategy, discusses BlackBerry Bridge, which is an app that allows the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet to access existing BlackBerry smartphone applications including secure browsing, access to corporate email, and many other enterprise uses. BlackBerry Bridge can be used with both BlackBerry Internet Service and BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

Bridge has been a feature that has drawn criticism from non-Berry users, as native email and BBM can only be accessed if you have a BlackBerry device. Although, RIM hopes to quell this criticism with a no strings attached update that will allow for the PlayBook to become a independent device, free of the smartphone. This will surely draw in more consumers that don't have a BlackBerry. What is your favorite feature of BlackBerry Bridge? How would you use it? Let us know in the comments!
