About a month ago RIM formally announced the BBX brand name at DevCon Americas in San Francisco. It was not long before the company was hit with their first legal battle regarding the name "BBX". The software company BASIS International Ltd filed a lawsuit stating that the name is causing great confusion with in its world wide customer base.

In an update to the lawsuit BASIS has filed for a temporary retraining order against RIM's use of the term BBX. This retraining order would prevent RIM from utilizing the word in their upcoming Asian DevCon in Singapore on December 7 and 8. A statement in support of the retraining order BASIS Chairman and CEO Nico Spence had this to say:

"Because of the ubiquity of the Internet, as well as the intentional use of this and other technologies to reach the entire world, the geographic reach of the conference is greatly amplified. As a result, BASIS customers and potential customers from the United States, Asia, and other locations throughout the world will be exposed to RIM's use of the BBX mark at the conference."
He went on to say: "BBX's reputation of platform independence that BASIS has carefully nurtured and promoted for over a quarter of a century is being systematically wiped out by RIM. The extent of the realignment of the world's media to immediately associate BBX with BlackBerry, and therefore a single platform, is perfectly illustrated by blog entries such as this one from earlier today. Software developers interested in selecting a platform-independent development tool won't take the time to discover that BASIS' BBX is not the same as BlackBerry BBX."

It seems pretty clear that BASIS isn't giving up easy on this fight. According to the United States Patent and Trademark Office there are over 15 other companies or organizations that are utilizing the name BBX. Maybe these companies will follow suite to reclaim their name.

If the sight of an extremely pregnant Jennifer Garner texting on her BlackBerry Bold 9900 and juggling a tray full of Starbucks coffee doesn't warm your heart, then I'm 99.98% sure that nothing will. But that won't stop my adventure of finding something that will make you squeal like a little girl and proclaim loudly about the cuteness. You can count on it. Honestly, this picture feels like my future in a way. Having babies, drinking coffee, and keeping my BlackBerry close? Yup, sounds about right.

Fun fact: Rihanna and I actually share the same first name. The same spelling too. That being "Robyn". I don't know if it's just a weird coincidence or what, but I'm also similarly dressed to her right now as well. Granted, it may not be her best look and it's pretty obvious that she knows it based on the look she's giving the person who snapped this very picture, but I won't judge her. I like patterned socks too. We patterned socks lovers must stick together!

For as many times that Mary Kate Olsen has been spotted carrying her BlackBerry, I think this is the first that I've seen where she's not trying to either hide herself or is already hidden by layers and layers of clothes and big hats. I'm impressed. This picture reminds me of myself a little. Walking some, stopping and texting, walking, stopping and texting, lather, rinse, repeat. Sometimes it's just easier to stop everything you're doing in order to get out that crucial tweet about your brand new BlackBerry Bold 9900. (Which I will be proudly doing tomorrow morning when I'm going to allow myself to un-box the one I bought on Thanksgiving. Get pumped!)

While I'm a full supporter of throwing a few back pre-flight, a few RIM employees seemed to take this a little too much to heart. George Campbell and Paul Alexander Wilson were forcefully removed from a (what was supposed to be) thirteen hour Air Canada flight to Beijing this past week. Naturally the two drunken men refused to listen to any of the flight staff, resulting in the pilots actually turning the Boeing 777 aircraft around to land in Vancouver...

RIM is bringing a new feature to the App World storefront that is designed to make publishing and discovering apps much safer for everyone involved. On Wednesday November 30th, 2011 RIM will be performing a server upgrade that will bring content rating to the storefront. The content rating system has been planned out based on input from our carrier, consumer, and developer partners to make sure they've implemented a content rating system that helps parents control what types of content their children have access to. After the upgrade is complete, all applications and themes in the BlackBerry App World storefront will receive a default rating. The majority of apps will be rated G (General). If your app or theme is in one of the categories listed below, it’ll receive a rating of T (Teen). When users upgrade to BlackBerry App World 3.1, they’ll be able to change their rating filter.

As for developers, starting on November 30th, 2011 you will have 15 days to log into the Vendor Portal and update your Content Rating questions if you believe your app or theme should have a different rating. All new apps being submitted that day will require that the Content Rating questions be answered.

In case you missed it, we have reported so far the DingleBerry jailbreak rooting the PlayBook, allowing access to Hulu via web browser, and RIM's official statement regarding the jailbreak. AT&T wants to know if the last text message you received is worth the chance of possibly getting into a vehicle collision and harming yourself or someone else. More likely than not, the answer would be "no". AT&T is striving to change the views of people about texting and driving. The risk factors of taking your eyes off the road for even just a few seconds to respond are not comparable to doing your best to ensure the safety of all the drivers on the road by not using your phone while driving. Now there's an app that can help take away the temptation to check your phone: AT&T's DriveMode App for BlackBerry.
    • You have a customizable "Allow List" of up to five contacts of your choosing to keep the ability to make and receive calls while DriveMode is enabled.
    • The app allows you to have one (1) music app and one (1) navigation app open when DriveMode is enabled.
    • By downloading DriveMode, participants are automatically signing AT&T's It Can Wait pledge to not text and drive.
    • Once DriveMode is disabled, you will be able to text, call, tweet, email, and play with your apps as usual.
So join the fight to stop texting and driving by downloading this app today. Use it, love it, pass it on and save a life. Help AT&T and all those who have signed the pledge by downloading the app to make the roads a safer place for everyone.

    2. BlackBerry PlayBook

A few days ago reports came out that the PlayBook was rooted. Code named "dingleberry", the jailbreak allows the user full access to the PlayBooks QNX based operating system. We knew it would only be a matter of time before we heard a response from RIM regarding the issue. The following is an email response we got from RIM regarding the jailbreak:

“Research In Motion (RIM) is aware of a claim made on Twitter by security researchers working together that suggests the ability to “jailbreak” a BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. The term “jailbreaking” is commonly used to describe altering the software on a smartphone or tablet in order to obtain access to systems or applications not officially authorized or distributed by the manufacturer. BlackBerry smartphone users are not affected.RIM is currently investigating this claim and has been in contact with one of the security researchers to discuss it.

RIM is currently not aware of a jailbreak being leveraged by anyone other than the researchers, who claim to have performed a jailbreak on their own BlackBerry PlayBook tablets only. If it is determined that the claim is accurate, RIM will follow its standard response process to develop and release a software update that is designed to minimize adverse impact to our customers or carrier partners. RIM is aware that the security researchers have stated they intend to release a tool to jailbreak the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. If such a tool is released, RIM will investigate it.

The security of mobile devices and major networked systems is tested by third-party security researchers every day. RIM also continually tests the security of its own products, and volunteers its products to recognized industry experts for security testing and certification to help identify possible issues. RIM is committed to the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet and to working with researchers to continue to protect our customers.
Now its just a matter of time before the cat and mouse games that Apple plays with it's jaibreaker's make their way to the world of BlackBerry.
