The locals in Mexico City are receiving a free gift from their local government,a BlackBerry app that will alert them when a earthquake is about to hit. The application will send a warning notification up to 50 seconds prior to the earthquake, depending on where it hits. 50 seconds may seem like a short time, but to some 50 seconds could mean the difference between life and death.

Mexico City's Mayor Marcelo Ebrard said that they "want to have the most complete seismic-alert system that there is," It is nice to see the Government taking care of it's citizens like this. Maybe we will see this in other countries as well.

Residents of Mexico City can download the free app here:

A while ago we told you about an intuitive app for the BlackBerry called Card2Contact. Since the folks over at Card2Contact have been hard at work on version 3.0.1. Card2Contact takes your paper business cards and moves them to your BlackBerry device in a quick and secure manner. What separates Card2Contact from the rest of the bunch is that is uses humans to transcribe your business cards. That means more accurate information and goes along with their 100% accuracy verification. I love that fact that I can say good bye to those piles of paper business cards and move them to my BlackBerry.

Version 3.0.1 brings us some new features to include:

    • enhanced Contacts page to view the uploaded business cards
    • status of the business cards conversion or send email feature in App
    • new pricing packages and Support features

    Why use Card2Contact?

    • First business card conversion app for BlackBerry with human verification!
    • Manual Transcription Team does the transcription especially for YOU!
    • You don’t need an assistant or text/voice recognition technology for conversion!
    • 100% accuracy!
    • In-app features allow you to take a picture of the business card, upload information, and buy credits.
    • Secure and reliable dedicated servers!
    • Once you store the data in your contact list, we won’t keep a backup of your data and card.
    • We send all the information on the Business Card. We won’t skip any details!

I think you get the picture. So head on over to BlackBerry App World and download it.

Good news for Canadians as RIM is now offering their $77 free app promotion to Canadian users. If you remember, we reported last month about the deal only being offered to US subscribers at the time. Good to see RIM making good and at least making this deal available to their home turf subscribers of Canada. The only catch is these apps are only available to those using a BlackBerry 7 device.

SideSwipe for BlackBerry has finally come out of beta and is now available to the general public via App World. We live in a time where the amount of readily available information is increasing faster than we can keep track of it, let alone understand it. There are more than 150 million blogs and billions of tweets, yet we still get most of our information from a handful of sites. The sheer volume of information is overwhelming; think of it as trying to drink from a fire hose. This is where SideSwipe comes in, offering users the ability to expand their information horizons without drowning in data.

    SideSwipe has the following features:
    - Customize a predefined category list
    - Read articles fast even when you are out of coverage because they are stored locally on your BlackBerry
    - Send articles using BBM, Email, SMS and Twitter (BlackBerry 7.0 devices)
    - Save articles to read later

We have seen a lot of news about the rise and fall of RIM. Some are happy as they can see how RIM is falling apart even without further investigation, and simply believing in rumors and speculations. Of course, not everyone is affected by the negative news that has been released as they know RIM is still on track and preparing itself to provide a much better services to all.

RIM is indeed not letting their hopes down at this stage as they still have lots of plans, not only for enterprise customers, but also for consumer markets. I have written an article about price reduction of their smartphone in India, and I know for sure that RIM will reduce BlackBerry Smartphone prices in other countries as this is part of their plans for consumer markets primarily to expand their markets.

Ever since RIM's earnings call yesterday the internet has been a buzz with less than accurate reports about what was talked about. It did not surprise me that there were negative reports, but it did surprise me how inaccurate some of the news sites and blogs reported the call. The underlying issue here is seems to be how RIM is addressing its consumer base.

Now before we dive into the facts it is important to know that we're talking about two different types of markets here. The Enterprise level market which purchases devices on a large scale, and mostly utilize RIM's proprietary device management software, and the general consumer market which mostly purchase devices for personal use.

    The Truth

The comments that gave birth to the idea that RIM was "giving up" on its consumer market were taken from RIM's CEO Thorsten Heins when he stated that RIM plans:

"to refocus on the enterprise business and capitalise on our leading position in this segment. [...] We believe that BlackBerry cannot succeed if we tried to be everybody’s darling and all things to all people. Therefore, we plan to build on our strength.”

Yes, one could see how these words could translate to RIM giving up on its consumer market However, I think maybe some should have stopped, took a breath, and looked at the big picture before they came to the conclusion that RIM was giving up on its consumer market.

The facts are RIM is not giving up on its consumer market. In a response to pocket-lint.com RIM's managing director of global sales and regional marketing, Patrick Spence stated that:

“The claim that RIM has said it will withdraw from the consumer market is wholly inaccurate,"

Furthermore, RIM's VP Of Developer Relations Alec Saunders responded to the issue with a tweet this morning that stated that the "remarks were wrongly interpreted. We are not leaving the consumer market."

    Enterprise Focus

Now that we know that RIM is not giving up on the consumer market we can focus on RIM's real focus for the upcoming quarters. The enterprise customers. Let's face, it RIM's bread and butter is not the consumer market. The profits come from enterprise customers that are purchasing things on a larger scale. Here is where RIM's security and device management trump every other product on the market.

RIM is focusing their energy into something they have been doing right for years. They are expanding their efforts to perfect their core strengths, and their core strengths at this time do not include the consumer market. Will they get there? Maybe. Should they get there? Only time will tell reveal that answer. RIM is going to follow whatever path that is going to generate the most amount of income.

    The Pivot Point

The pivot point for RIM this year will most certainly be the release of BB 10. This by far will be a game changer in the way both the consumer market and enterprise level markets view RIM. In a way BB 10 has to be a success, it has to deliver, it has to wow and it must be able to cater seamlessly to both markets. RIM delivered on the PlayBook OS 2.0 and they can deliver on BB 10.

Some very good news to all BlackBerry fans out there in India as RIM just marked down the prices of some of their smartphones by up to 26%. Sounds great right? According from RIM, they decided to have this discounted price not entirely because they want to be on top again, but rather, to expand the markets across the globe.

This strategy is a very simple yet an effective way of providing great experience to everyone in India. They have noticed a lot of consumers are younger, so they wanted to make sure that all of them will be able to try and be satisfied with what BlackBerry smartphones can offer. Reducing the price is indeed a risk RIM has to take just to keep up and be available to everybody as much as possible.
"RIM as a brand has moved from just an enterprise device to as a more consumer device. Be it our services or the product, we have seen a strong uptake by the youth and therefore, to get the devices into more hands, we are cutting the prices," RIM India Managing Director Sunil Dutt said.
These smartphones are the BlackBerry Curve 8520, Curve 9360, Curve 9380 and Torch 9860. All four handsets were earlier available for Rs 10, 990 Rs 19, 990 Rs 18, 990 and Rs 29, 990 respectively but they can now be purchased by up to 26% so you can enjoy the BlackBerry experience.

Moreover, Dutt mentioned that RIM aims to further uplift the presence and leverage the demand for BlackBerry smartphones.
"The focus is not just on reducing prices, but we want to address a larger number of people and give them the overall experience of BlackBerry. We will continue to focus on bringing locally relevant products, services and applications to Indian consumers," he said.
Even the BlackBerry PlayBook started to be sold at a lower price in December of last year that gave 21% market share in India. It was launched at Rs 27, 990 but can now be purchased for only Rs 13, 990 which is almost more than half of the price.

If they have done that in India, I am pretty sure that there will come a time RIM will follow suit in other countries, such as Canada, U.S., and other Third World Countries. Looking forward to what RIM can offer in the future. This would only mean that RIM is now reaching the hearts of all consumers by cutting down the prices, but still the same top of the line quality to be able to provide the best smartphone experience to everyone across the nation.

Would you want this price reduction in your country? I do!
