We were a bit surprised to learn today that RIM is suspending their BlackBerry Certification Program indefinitely.

If this certification program sounds foreign to you, it's a program that trains professionals on the BlackBerry solution for real-world scenarios.

    Dear BlackBerry Alliance Partner:

RIM has decided to suspend indefinitely its BlackBerry Certification Program. A broad range of online and instructor-led training offerings remain available to help our customers use BlackBerry products (see BlackBerry - BlackBerry | Wireless Handheld Devices, Software & Services from Research In Motion (RIM)). RIM will continue to work with customers and partners to develop the most valuable learning and support services. Effective immediately partners will no longer be required to complete their Service Competency obligations under Section 2.3 of the Alliance Program Guide. Until September 9, 2011 you may contact us with any questions you may have.

Earlier today, I received an email from JaredCo about one of their many BlackBerry applications. Michael, informed me that the JaredCo Screen Grabber app has been upgraded and it is now BBM Connected. This app has now just a few elite applications in the connected BBM world.

It seems that each day goes bye more and more apps are becoming connected. Who knows, with Hackathon approaching, we might just be announcing even more big apps that will be connected.

    From Michael:
Screen Grabber, our screen shot app for the BlackBerry, has now been upgraded to include the BlackBerry Messenger™ integration. With Screen Grabber you can now send your screen shots to your BBM™ contacts right from the app! Screen Grabber is one of the few free screen shot apps that will not put watermarks on the screen shots.

One of the most recent attempts to make BlackBerry device lines a bit more consumer friendly was the addition of BBM Social to BlackBerry Messenger 6. During our recent trip to BlackBerry 7 Fan Night, we had the opportunity to speak with a BBM Product Expert who explained to us how BBM Social makes BlackBerry devices stand out from the competition.

App updates are always something that is welcomed. When Wakeful was launched in beta several months ago, I felt that it was a good basic app, but lacked many of the customizations I would have enjoyed seeing.

Wakeful was silently updated to v1.1.6.1 this week. This update brings the capability to add Customized News and Weather!

The Wakeful team have been working really hard on our latest version. It includes a bunch of new features like Local, Sports, International News, Entertainment, Technology, Science and even Health news. This mesn you can customize the way you wake up more than ever.
To make sure that everyone has a chance to try these new features, they've reset everyone's trial period to 7 days.

A few details of RIM's first QNX smartphone have leaked out, and it looks like the release for this device may be delayed right out of the gate. RIM is famous for their device battery life, and unparalleled device security. However, RIM has had to delay native email support for its first QNX device, the Playbook, because it did not play well with BlackBerry Enterprise Server. Rewriting it's Enterprise software has proven a challenge, and integrating a smartphone with QNX would be even more challenging.
