And another one bites the dust. The visual voice-mail company YouMail has decided to part ways with BlackBerry. YouMail was recently updated to version 2.7.8 with many improvements to including the ability to ditch callers, new faster UI, and even completely removed ads from within the app. However despite, all of these improvements and bug fixes CEO Alex Quilici stated the release was "bittersweet", and that they were suspending doing and further work on the BlackBerry app.

The reasoning behind this decision was that lack of BlackBerry users using the app. YouMail is listed among the top ten app in the productivity section of BlackBerry App World. Still, Quilici mentioned that his company has seen a steady decline with BlackBerry users over the past year. According to Quilici those users have moved to other mobile platforms like the iPhone and Android.

YouMail has been a popular app among BlackBerry users. However, its exodus from BlackBerry leaves some concerns regarding the user base for BlackBerry apps. RIM has been actively interacting with developers over the past year to expand the native applications for its line of BlackBerry devices, and to provide to them the necessary tools to create high quality apps. Still, will there be enough interest in BB10?

In the long-run the user base dictates whether or not a company will invest in making apps for a device. RIM may see an increase in independent developers, but what about larger development firms that have multiple apps? Will they see enough financial interest to move or keep developing for BlackBerry devices?

The good news is that events like BB JAM, will help RIM with developer relations and interest. RIM's upcoming BlackBerry World 2012 is coming up soon and it will be interesting to hear what some of the keynote speakers have to say about the current state of BlackBerry. This is going to be a pivotal year for RIM and its user base, and one can only hope that they will remain faithful to BlackBerry.

After failing to maintain their number one spot in their home country in Canada, RIM is now trying to get more markets offshore. Recent news discussed is that they are penetrating other countries, especially in the Middles East, Asia, and Africa in order to get back on track to providing excellent mobile communication services. At the moment, RIM is planning to put up a local retail store which will be set in Dubai as part of their marketing strategy to continue that great impression across the globe.

This 1, 500 square feet retail store in Dubai is said to be the flagship store of RIM, along with a local partner - Axiom Telecom, are planned across the region as mentioned by the Managing Director of RIM’s Middle East business, Sandeep Saihgal.

It seems many of you have being experiencing an issue with App World on your PlayBook today. We've had several forum member contact us saying they've seen the error message:

BlackBerry App World is not available in your country. Please check BlackBerry.com/appworld for updates.
The solution for this issue seems to be quite simple. If you’re having this issue, just open your device settings and change your language to something other than English, wait 30 seconds or so, and open App World again.

BlackBerry Messenger has gotten more competition this morning as Samsung has officially released their ChatOn Messaging app on BlackBerry. BlackBerry becomes the third supported operating system supported by ChatOn (Android and iOS being the first two) and is currently only available for download OTA (not in App World).

The app itself is pretty cool. It's definitely not a BBM killer but it is very stable and does the job as intended. How it will function in terms of battery life, memory management; etc is still yet to be seen but it is very apparent that Samsung does see BlackBerry users as relevant when it comes to messaging. If you do try ChatOn let us know how you like it!

It may not be long before BlackBerry users see a reduce or even a removal of carrier fees to use their BlackBerry device. Documents obtained by the New York Times suggest that RIM under pressure, may have to greatly reduce or even remove the infrastructure access fees that it charges carries. This may a leap of excitement for most BlackBerry users, but to RIM it is no leap of joy. Infrastructure access fees account for a large portion of income for RIM and reducing that net income will only add to its current financial concerns.

These documents that support this claim are actually part of an annual filling to the United States Security and Exchange Commission. In section titled "Risks Related to the Company’s Business and its Industry", RIM states that because of its competitors ability to cover their infrastructure costs in alternate manners " the company is facing greater pressure to reduce its infrastructure access fees."

In addition to the competition, another contributing factor to reducing the infrastructure access fees may be RIM's next generation superphone. RIM stated that concerns with new products (BB 10) not utilizing the network infrastructure in the same way its traditional devices do could also affect infrastructure access fees. The full statement by RIM says that " the infrastructure access fees charged by the Company may also fall under pressure if the new products it launches do not utilize the network infrastructure in the same way or to the same extent as the Company’s existing products."

This could mean that the BlackBerry 10 devices may not require an additional fee to access the BlackBerry network. However, what would this mean for BBM? RIM's new BB 10 devices are set to be released in the latter half of this year, and will be based on the QNX based OS that the current PlayBook runs. Even now RIM is struggling with adding BBM to its QNX platform, and it could prove to be an issue with BB 10 devices.

The infrastructure access fees are great for the consumer, but now it seems as though RIM has another issue to worry about; getting BB 10 to seamlessly integrate with its network infrastructure and be able to run BBM. We saw this issue come up with the initial release of the PlayBook and to date the only way to affectively integrate the PlayBook with any network is through costly software and some hefty upgrades. In addition BBM is still not available on the PlayBook.

BBM Music has been updated to version 1.2.0.16. Not much in regards to a change log, but there are some key issue that you should be aware of. BBM Music has come along way since its initial release and we have seen some great progress from RIM on this application.

The following is a list of issues that appear in BBM Music version 1.2.0.16 application:

    • “No Results found for Recommended” message displayed at bottom of recommended songs in catalog list
    • Blank error message displayed on attempt to upgrade after an initial failure and battery pull
    • “See Playlist” remains in the middle of the list of songs when the list is expanded
    • Application launches before registration is complete when launched from ‘extended search’

You can head on over to the Beta Zone to download this application.

Looks like the BlackBerry Curve 9380, has made an early decision to go into retirement. It was not long ago that we were talking about this device making its way into consumers hands, but unfortunately Bell Canada has decided to remove the device from its inventory. From the picture it looks as though they had it at end of life status back in March. It seems like the 9380 did not go over very well with consumers.

Once again the BlackBerry proves that its security is matched by no other device on the market today. A recent survey taken by antivirus and security giant Trend Micro shows BlackBerry OS 7.0 coming out on top over iOS5, Windows Phone 7.5, and Android 2.3.

The survey scored each platform on factors like, built-in security, application security, authentication, device firewall, device wipe, and virtualisation. BlackBerry had the highest score at 2.89. Apples iOS came out in second place at 1.7, Windows Mobile at 1.16, and Android at 1.37

This is great news, but should come to no surprise to BlackBerry users as RIM has always taken pride in developing secure devices. A good organization always has security in mind, but unfortunately the BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) mentality mandated by CEO's have opened the doors for even more security threats. Thankfully organizations who put their trust in BlackBerry wont have to be as concerned about security issues as the BlackBerry can take care of itself.

Call it a freak of nature, on purpose, or a RIM slip-up, as BBOS member eKoKnight has just posted a screenshot in our forums of a new "Verizon Wireless Store" category showing up in PlayBook's App World. I can also verify the category myself on my tablet, and nothing but a empty loading screen is all I get from it. Could this be the prepping of a 4G data enabled tablet from Verizon? Time for Verizon native and approved apps for the PlayBook? PlayBook Skype for Verizon subscribers!
