In a day and age of smartphones being involved in everything we do, they can play a key part in ensuring that you have a great 4th of July this year! Whether hosting or attending a backyard barbecue bash, having a relaxing picnic at the park, or hitting the road on one of the busiest travel days of the year, here are some ways your BlackBerry can keep you organized, entertained and in control.

    Planning your Getaway -

The Fourth of July is one of the busiest travel times of the year. It’s important to plan ahead, but it’s equally important to be ready to adjust on the fly so you can avoid the unexpected, sometimes nightmarish travel.

    • BlackBerry Travel lets you plan and manage your trips. This app puts all travel updates in one place. If there are any changes to train/plane/bus reservations, you’ll receive an immediate notification!
    • Want to avoid traffic as best as you can? BlackBerry Traffic, with hands-free turn-by-turn directions, gives you an ETA, as well as the most efficient travel routes based on current traffic conditions.

    Barbecue/Picnic Extravaganza -

Utilizing your smartphone can help you throw that unforgettable Fourth of July barbecue or picnic.

    • Instant messaging apps help you stay connected in real-time. With the new BBM, you can share calendar entries and invite your BBM contacts to your bash. Form a group chat to keep everyone in the loop on possible last minute changes.
    • What’s a backyard bash without music? Create a stellar playlist with input from the group using BBM Music, a social music sharing and discovery app. Smartphone accessories can also come in to play. The BlackBerry Music Gateway lets you wirelessly stream music to your stereo from any Bluetooth enabled smartphone or device. The BlackBerry Music Gateway turns your smartphone into a remote control. When paired, change tracks and adjust volume from your smartphone from up to 30 feet away. The BlackBerry Music Gateway also works with any Bluetooth enabled phone so everyone at the party or picnic can get involved
    • Of course, it’s not all about food! Get some drink ideas from Mobile Bartender, which includes hundreds of recipes to take advantage of, or DrinkMaster, which has a database of over 6,000 drinks.

Take Your 4th of July Viral -

Use your smartphone to capture and share thoughts, images and experiences real time.

    • Leave the bulky digital camera at home and capture all your fun moments using your smartphone camera. Snap pictures and take videos and share them instantly through Facebook, Twitter and more!

Looks like the Torch 9810 has been formally retired from service at TELUS Canada. Although this may be bitter to some, cleaning out old inventory to make room for newer devices is a common practice among mobile device carriers. We are getting closer to the release of BlackBerry

If you are into old school looking 8-bit style games, you need to check out a handful of Android games from Orangepixel that have been ported to the BlackBerry PlayBook! There are six games to be exact, and they all focus on arcade game style fun. I happen to love the old retro style gaming. You can download these 8-bit games by Orangepixel in BlackBerry App World for only $1.99 each.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas within the BlackBerry community. Yesterday, we shared with you some leaked BlackBerry 10 L and N-series UI specs. Today, more information has surfaced that depicts what the BBM messaging application may look like.

According to yet another leaked internal document, BBM on the new BB 10 devices will have the ability to utilize themes. According to the document, changing the theme to a black theme can decrease battery consumption by approximately 25%. In addition, further optimizing the screen for the OLED-display decreases battery consumption by 75% compared to the direct translation.

This is some good news. I'm liking the fluid interface of the BBM chat windows on the L-series BB 10 device.

Washington, DC - Earlier in the month the U.S Department of Defense (DoD) released their mobile device strategy. The seven page document identifies the DoD goals for capitalizing on the use of mobile devices and applications, within the DoD IT infrastructure.

The unclassified documents try to address the growing need to a centralized mobile device and application management. "Although mobile devices are the new and popular item in today's commercial market, this strategy is not simply about embracing the newest technology; it is about keeping the DoD workforce relevant in an era when information and cyberspace play a critical role in mission success," writes DoD Chief Information Officer Teresa Takai in the forward. The DoD's mobile device strategy can be reduced to three main goals:

Looks like the first BB 10 device series are beginning to see the early stages of the release procedures at RIM. A leaked internal document from RIM claims to have some information regarding two new BlackBerry 10 devices. What is being deemed the L-series and N-series may reference the previously internal code names BlackBerry London and the BlackBerry Nevada.

Similar to the BlackBerry 10 Alpha device the BlackBerry 10 L-series is said to have an impressive 365 PPI, 768×1280 screen resolution. That offers quite a refreshing display compared to previous BlackBerry smartphones. Here are some of the leaked screen specifications of the BlackBerry 10 L-series:

    • 768×1280 screen resolution
    • 55mm wide
    • 356 PPI

In addition to the BlackBerry 10 L-series, some information regarding the N-series has also leaked. The N-series is said to be RIM's first BlackBerry 10 device with a physical QWERTY keyboard. Its shape is eerily similar to some current BlackBerry models that we already know. Although looks may be secondary to some when comparing it to device functionality. The leaked specifications regarding the BlackBerry N-series are as follows:

    • 720×720 screen resolution
    • 52 – 53mm wide
    • 330 PPI

You can see the obvious difference in the screen size, but still very nice quality. This is exciting news as we eagerly await the launch of BB 10. Although this information is leaked it still sounds very promising.
