Theme Studio For BlackBerry OS 7 Devices Delayed Until Mid 2012

    2. BlackBerry News

Looks like we wont be seeing themes on our OS 7 devices any time soon. Many have been expressing their concerns about the lack of theme support on OS 7 devices for a while now. We were told that the liquid graphics engine within OS 7 devices broke the theme engine. However, we were still left wondering when we would be able to get our hands on it.

According to CIO.com, Alec Saunders RIM's VP of Developer Relations gave us a little more info on a release time frame:

Another interesting tidbit for BlackBerry developers: Though a compatibility issue with the new “Liquid Graphics” engine in the BlackBerry 7 OS has kept RIM from releasing BlackBerry Theme Studio tools for the latest BlackBerry OS, Saunders says these tools will become available mid-2012, he says. (RIM has an internal theme building tool, which is how the company built the custom “Porsche” theme used on the new, limited edition BlackBerry P’9981 device, but the tool is not available to developers outside of RIM, according to Saunders.)
So there you have it. Theme studio should be coming some time in mid-2012. Seems like 2012 will be the year of the BlackBerry if everything pans out the way RIM is portraying.

BlackBerry Store Grand Opening In Thailand Causes Quite The Stir

I don't know about you, but I am getting a little tired of all the negative BlackBerry press that's been going around for a while. I get it, RIM has been having issues financially, and has had some rocky relationships with consumers. Every now and then something comes around again that kick starts my love for BlackBerry all over again.

The video above has surfaced that shows the grand opening of the first BlackBerry Lifestyle store in Thailand. You can see from the video that people were quite excited to get their hands on any and every BlackBerry device they could get. The lines were even out the door, and stretched down the hall for a bit. All of it quickly reminded me of the Apple fan fare craze that we have going on in the states.

Overall the video got me a little more excited to be a BlackBerry user and fan. Even the music was little catchy ( I caught myself bobbing at times). The video is from back in September, but its a nice find. We can only hope that RIM can reignite the fire for BlackBerry that once burned very strong in the USA.

When BlackBerry 6.1 was first mentioned almost a year ago, the original build had mobile hotspot as an included feature. With the updated name/branding change to BlackBerry 7, we were left without the feature being added.

Several sources recently have posted information of a BlackBerry Torch 9810 running OS 7.1, which seems to now have mobile hotspot as an included feature.

The amazing folks from bjxiaoc have generously posted a video of mobile hotspot in action on a 9810.

Any app that makes my life (or rather, email reading) more simplistic is something I welcome with open hands. Show Me The Images was updated today to v1.3.42, which now brings official support for BlackBerry 7.

I've unofficially use the app on my 9900 for the last few months without any issues, so it's great to see them officially update it so that everyone knows it's safe to use with their BlackBerry 7 devices.

Show Me The Images automatically downloads images in your e-mails without you needing to hit that "Get Images" menu item. You can disable it, download based on a safe list of e-mail addresses (default) or download no matter who the contact is.

BlackBerry Smartphones Aid in Disaster Relief

We have seen that mobile devices, particularly BlackBerrys, can have negative and positive aspects when being used or misused. We had the Egyptian and England riots that both were fueled by BlackBerry and BBM as these are just a couple examples of how BlackBerry is seen as part of the problem, and even blamed in some cases. This time around, however, BlackBerry is seen in a positive light. RIM is being recognized by the International Medical Corps for how BlackBerry smartphones assisted with disaster recovery efforts in Haiti and Japan. RIM will be honored at a ceremony in Los Angeles on Tuesday, November 8.

Reckless Getaway for the BlackBerry PlayBook

A few days ago, we let you know of Polarbit's Reckless Racing.

It seems that they have another racing app called Reckless Getaway. This game is your typical "outrun the cops" racing game.

Who’d a thought robbing the bank would be the easy part?

Now comes the real challenge - to escape with your hard-earned loot and the fuzz hot at your heels!

Weave in and out of oncoming traffic; dodge, outrun or ram pursuing police cars and just generally crash, smash and thrash your way through 16 varied levels.

Let’s face it: beating someone across the finishing line is a lot of fun, but not nearly as much fun as tackling them into oncoming traffic to watch chaos ensue
