RIM Patches PlayBook In Response To DingleBerry Jailbreak

It didn't take long for RIM to respond to the recently released PlayBook jailbreak. A new patch has been released that includes support for Flash 10.3, updates to Adobe AIR, and last but not least "security fixes" This may be a new record for patch management by RIM. Keep in mind this patch has only been reported by PlayBook OS 1.0 users, so it seems as though the OS 2.0 developer version has not been patched.

Although it has not been completely confirmed yet that this update renders the DingleBerry exploit useless; I think its pretty safe to say that It's just a matter of time before it does happen. So if you want to keep your self dingle-berried I would stay away from this patch.

Magmic solved the BlackBerry 7 Theme drought last week when they released their first Bold 9900/9930 theme, festively titled Deck the Halls. We are not quite certain if this theme (and the four other themes released today) were created using a tweaked version of Theme Builder 6 or if Magmic has discovered a totally different way to make their themes!

What a perfect holiday gift from a renowned theme maker!

If you’re decorating your home for the holiday season, why not decorate your Blackberry, too?
Deck the Halls Theme from Magmic brings the holiday decor to your Blackberry wallpaper with a creative twist. As the days in December pass, this theme will gradually add decorations all over, transforming a normal room into a cozy den suited for the holiday season*. Keep a keen eye out to find all the changes! This theme comes with an icon package complete with a festive wreath to highlight your favourite apps. Four BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930 Themes Released By Magmic

I really love my BlackBerry 7 device, but the lack of themes was one of the biggest negative aspects of my Bold 9900.

Through unofficial methods (& possibly hacking certain aspects of Theme Builder 6), Magmic has released not one, not two, but FOUR BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930 themes! This comes merely days after they released Deck The Halls Holiday Theme. There is obviously many rough elements within the themes, & the overalll customization might be minimal, but this is quite certainly a great start to possibly higher quality themes in the near future.

**These Themes are also compatible with several OS 4/5/6 devices**

It was only a matter of time before RIM would find out about the rooting of the PlayBook. In an email to BBOS RIM responded with the following statement regarding the recent jailbreak:

RIM is aware of reports that a security researcher has released a tool designed toallow BlackBerry PlayBook users to jailbreak their tablet. RIM is following itsstandard security response process to investigate the functionality and impact ofthis tool and if needed, RIM will develop, test, and release a software update thatis designed to minimize the potential adverse impact to our customers.
Now its only a matter of time before RIM releases a patch to close up the exploit found by @xpvqs . I suspect we see it within the next couple of days. Let the games begin!

    PlayBook Jailbreak "DingleBerry" Now Available

    by
    ice2921
    Published on 12-05-2011 05:41 PM

Last week we reported that the BlackBerry PlayBook had been rooted. This was really big news, as the terms root and jailbreak are virtually unheard of in the world of BlackBerry. That all changed when a tweet heard round the world by @cmwdotme declared he had successfully rooted the PlayBook. Cmwdotme along with fellow hackers @neuralic and @xpvqs stated that they would make the jailbreak available within one week of gaining root access to the device.

Cmwdotme has made well on his promise and released his jailbreak to the world. The jailbreak has been posted on the official website of the project dingleberry.it. This is good news as many people have been anxiously waiting for this since its announcement.

RIM has already responded to the jailbreak, saying that they would follow normal patching procedures as soon as the method used to gain root access was released. I am sure that we can expect a patch from RIM within the next couple of days. The developers behind the dingleberry exploit have stated that when this exploit is patched by RIM they will work on version 2.0 of their jailbreaking tool. Now the cat and mouse games have officially started.

Warning: This download is for experienced users only and is in beta. So please download with caution.

Alleged RIM 2012 Roadmap Preview Reveals BBX Codenames

Apparently the folks over at crackberry have been given a sneak peek of RIM's 2012 roadmap, either that or its a nicely made up story. Either way the alleged roadmap hints towards some code names for RIM's upcoming BBX "superphones" The internet has been bubbling with guesses and statements regarding RIM's new QNX based devices. Names like London and Surfboard have already been said to be associated with the first BBX device set to drop in early 2012. As always rumors and speculation rule the internet when it comes things like this.

According to the roadmap preview we will see about five new BBX devices next year. That sounds about right based off of RIM's previous release history. In addition to the BlackBerry London codenamed "Lisbon," "Milan," "Nevada," and "Black Forest" will also be launched next year.

According to the report the BlackBerry Milan is slated for March, and may be similar to the BlackBerry London. Perhaps different versions for carriers. Other than the codename there isn't much yet out on the BlackBerry Lisbon. As for the BlackBerry Nevada it is said to be similar to the BlackBerry Bold 9900 and may be slated for late November. Last but not least, is the BlackBerry Black Forest which may actually be a 10" PlayBook. Out of all of these the 10" PlayBook may be the most believable as RIM did tell us that they are working on a 10" PlayBook back in november at the BlackBerry Innovation Forums.

As always whenever someone tries to map out the future of a major company like RIM they are usually either partially right or completely off. So we will see about this one. Either way it seems as though we are slowly putting together the pieces of this BBX puzzle one rumor at a time.

BASIS Files Motion For Temporary Restraining Order Against RIM's Use Of BBX

    by
    ice2921
    Published on 12-02-2011 05:36 AM
    Categories:
    1. BlackBerry News

About a month ago RIM formally announced the BBX brand name at DevCon Americas in San Francisco. It was not long before the company was hit with their first legal battle regarding the name "BBX". The software company BASIS International Ltd filed a lawsuit stating that the name is causing great confusion with in its world wide customer base.

In an update to the lawsuit BASIS has filed for a temporary retraining order against RIM's use of the term BBX. This retraining order would prevent RIM from utilizing the word in their upcoming Asian DevCon in Singapore on December 7 and 8. A statement in support of the retraining order BASIS Chairman and CEO Nico Spence had this to say:

"Because of the ubiquity of the Internet, as well as the intentional use of this and other technologies to reach the entire world, the geographic reach of the conference is greatly amplified. As a result, BASIS customers and potential customers from the United States, Asia, and other locations throughout the world will be exposed to RIM's use of the BBX mark at the conference."
He went on to say: "BBX's reputation of platform independence that BASIS has carefully nurtured and promoted for over a quarter of a century is being systematically wiped out by RIM. The extent of the realignment of the world's media to immediately associate BBX with BlackBerry, and therefore a single platform, is perfectly illustrated by blog entries such as this one from earlier today. Software developers interested in selecting a platform-independent development tool won't take the time to discover that BASIS' BBX is not the same as BlackBerry BBX."

It seems pretty clear that BASIS isn't giving up easy on this fight. According to the United States Patent and Trademark Office there are over 15 other companies or organizations that are utilizing the name BBX. Maybe these companies will follow suite to reclaim their name.
