In case you're out of the loop, SayIt for BlackBerry has been updated quite a few times as of recently. Not that it's a bad thing in the slightest. With an update always comes fixes and improvements, and it looks like the SayIt developers are genuinely determined to deliver the best app they can create. With the v1.3.5 update comes:

    • Automatic detection of BES, BIS, Direct Carrier TCP/IP, WiFi and auto-switch to WiFi (if available)
    • Connection issue fixes

Update To v1.30.6 For Fightin' Words

If there's one thing that really gets my blood boiling, it's the lack of Words with Friends on my BlackBerry Bold 9900. While I'm easily one of the worst Scrabble-type game players, that has yet to extinguish any of the excitement I get from playing Fightin' Words. This app was originally developed by similar people (minus the horrible Scrabble skills) that were extremely put out by the lack of a decent game in this genre. If the update has yet to reach your BlackBerry, here's what changes:

    • Resolves issue of Create Account button not working properly
    • Added ability to go to login screen from the splash screen
    • App closure after exiting chat or swapping windows has been fixed

Get out your BlackBerry and go head-to-head against your friends on BlackBerry or Android with Fightin' Words!

Pixelated For BlackBerrys And PlayBook Updated To v3.1

Pixelated is a strategy game where the purpose is to eventually get all the blocks/pixels one color in less than 21 color changes. Starting in the left hand corner, each turn needs to be calculated perfectly so that as many surrounding pixels can join into the main group by being the same color. In all the time I've been playing Pixelated, I don't think I've ever seen an update, but this v3.1 comes with some new goodies:

    • Left-handed users can now more easily play on their BlackBerry Playbook
    • Send your best scores to Facebook and Twitter from your Blackberry OS 7 device

I am 100%, without a doubt in my mind, addicted to Pixelated. Both fortunately and unfortunately I have yet to beat it. Half of me grows increasingly frustrated because I get so close to winning.. then I don't. However, the other half of me is so glad to have a game that I can't beat after having it for 30 minute. Yes, I have downloaded games that I expect to be remotely challenging, but I work my way through all the levels within a short amount of time, resulting in my having to delete an app because I can't go any further with it.

    • Download Pixelated for your BlackBerry device and PlayBook in the App World
    • For more difficulty levels and move counter, download Pixelated Plus in the App World

As you may remember, RIM launched the BBM Challenge Council Program in October, which partnered aspiring young adults with some of today's top celebrity influencers, including Whitney Port and Hope Solo. With the success of the program - millions of youth tuned-in and thousands participated - RIM is running a second generation of the BBM Challenge Council.

This generation, called The BlackBerry Challenge Council Project, will be led by popular comedic actors/producers Streeter Seidell and Amir Blumenfeld (best known for MTV’s Pranked and CollegeHumor.com). The two comedic actors will challenge today’s youth to compete in a series of five challenges over three months presented through webisodes. With the help of special celebrity guest cameos, including Greyson Chance and Leighton Meester, each Challenge Council webisode will examine a misconception or myth about BlackBerry smartphones and ask participants to help correct it. The webisodes will also highlight core features of the latest line of BlackBerry smartphones such as their social music capabilities and faster web browsing. Winning entries will be awarded prizes including tickets to exclusive events and all-inclusive trips or experiences with their friends.

RIM has recently won an award for Competitive Strategy Leadership. The award given by Frost & Sullivan's Latin America division recognize's RIM's ability to implement competitive market intelligence in Latin America. RIM has recently enhanced its marketing strategy to appeal to more consumers.

Opera Mini Next 7.0 Browser Now Available For BlackBerry

One could argue that Opera Mini is the best alternative browser for BlackBerry. Personally I use it and actually prefer it over the native browser at times. Personally I like that it renders some pages better than the native browser, and it seems to be faster as well. So needless to say I was happy to hear that version 7.0 has been released for the BlackBerry. Opera has always done a great job supporting BlackBerry devices, so its nice to see it being updated almost in sync with other platforms.

Before you jump to the download, please note that Opera Next is sort of like a beta version of the "Next" release of Opera Mini. So it will install along side of your existing Opera Mini installation as a white icon. That way if it crashes or does not work correctly you can always remove it, and continue using the stable version.

This version has quite a few features. Here are some of them taken from the change log:

Opera Mini Next has the following new features:

    Smart Page

The most visible new feature is perhaps the redesign of the start screen and the addition of Smart Page. This page gives you an overview of your favorite sites, latest updates from social networks (Twitter and Facebook), news gathered from your favorite sites (via their RSS feeds) and suggested links. Note that you can clear the Smart Page by selecting "Clear history" from the privacy settings.

Support for more than 9 speed dials

One common complaint has been the restrictions on the number of speed dials. We have now solved this and you can add as many as you like, or in practice as many as your device can handle. Synching your speed dials between desktop and Opera Mini should be a much nicer experience now. Note that there is a couple of known issue when synching with Opera Link. Speed dials may move around unexpectedly and the order can be inconsistent.

We have also added a convenient way to add new speed dials: just press the star found in the address bar (touch devices only).

    Improved support for RTL

Right-to-left text in UI elements should now be correctly drawn. We would like to fix as many of the these bugs as possible, so if you find issues, please report them.

    Tab improvements

Tabs can now be closed with one click on touch devices. And when you close a tab, Opera Mini will switch to the last used tab.

No more "www." in address bar

Most sites today can be used without the WWW prefix. So we have removed it as well. The auto completion still supports it of course.

Functionality New Reason For Latest Federal BlackBerry Dump

    by
    ice2921
    Published on 03-01-2012 06:59 AM

    1. BlackBerry Devices,
    2. BlackBerry News

The disturbing trend of federal agencies dumping the BlackBerry is continuing to grow and a rapid pace. This year alone there have been a total of 11,300 BlackBerry devices that are to be phased out by federal agencies. The latest of these agencies the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) is planning on phasing out its 3,800 BlackBerry devices for iPhones in less than a year. Rick Holgate ATF's chief information officer stated that they “We’re going to delete the BlackBerry from the mix,”.

The agencies reasoning behind the change was the lack of the BlackBerry devices functionality. “Video streaming, GPS capability, capabilities, the camera … a variety of things,” contributed to the decision Holgate said. “Yes, these things exist on BlackBerrys, but in terms of ease of use and adaptability of the devices, the iPhones are the more functional and compelling use case.”

The reasons for these massive changes range from cutting expenses, to lack of functionality on the BlackBerry device. The question that comes up is are these really legit reasons to make the switch. The answer is a solid no. Most organizations are always looking for ways to save money. The problems is that they are sacrificing security and superior communication over saving a quick buck. Government agencies need to be looking at the big picture instead of the smaller scope of this years budget.

What about functionality? It's no secret that the BlackBerry device has lacked in this department over the past few years. However, I have to wonder if any of these decision makers have taken an in depth look at the functionality of the BlackBerry OS 7 devices, or the newly refreshed PlayBook OS 2.0. Recognizing that the BlackBerry device still has the functionality, but it's a little harder to implement and adopt is not a valid reason to make such a big decision.
