It's important to note is that localbar2 uses what is called a proxy to install the .bar files. A proxy is nothing more than a computer or application that serves as an intermediary between your web browser and the internet. To learn more about the proxy's role in this application I suggest you take alook at Yohanes documentation in the section titled WhyUse A Proxy?
Now before we get started it is important to know that there are two ways to use localbar2. The first way is using your BlackBerry device as a proxy, and the second way is using a proxy on your local network. The latter is much faster. In this tutorial you will learn how to do both.
Option 1: Using Your BlackBerry As A Proxy
You can use your BlackBerry as proxy with localbar2 to install .barfiles. The nice part about this option is that localbar2 provides us with the BlackBerry app that we need. The bad part about this optionis that it does not work on all BlackBerry models and is very slow. The app is still being refined so please use this method knowing that.
Things you will need:
- LocalBarProxy (OTA) or LocalBarProxy (Desktop Install) Updated version works with more models
- localbar2.bar
- localbar2 (alternative download, password is "localbar"
Step1: Install localbar2
Localbar2is installed the same way you would sideload any other .bar file. However, instructions on how to sideload .bar files is beyond the scope of this tutorial and will not be covered. Once you have successfully installed localbar2 you can move on to the next step.
Step2: Installing LocalBarProxy On Your BlackBerry
To install LocalBarProxy on your BlackBerry simply click on the link above on your BlackBerry device and install.
Step3: Prepare Your PlayBook
Preparing your PlayBook is the most important part of this process. If you do not do this it will not work. Your PlayBook must be in development mode in order for this process to work. To enable development mode you need to navigate to Settings--->Security ---> then Development Mode You will then see the following screen:
Tap on Development Mode and you will see the option to "Use Development Mode", and a slider right next to it to turn it off or on. Move it to the On position, and you will be presented with the following screen:
Enter a password and confirm it, you will need this later. You can confirm you have successfully enable development mode by looking at the top right section of your notification bar, and you should see an icon that looks like a person. You have successfully prepared your PlayBook for localbar.
Step4: Installing A Bar File
After you have completed steps 1-2 its time to install a bar file. To do this you must make sure WiFi is enabled on your BlackBerry. Click the icon on your BlackBerry for LocalBarProxy, and you will be presented with the following screen:
Take note of the address (yours will be different) listed under the "Started at" section you will need this later.
Next you need to start localbar2 on your PlayBook, to do this simply launch the application on your PlayBook. You will then be presentedwith the following screen:
To the left you will see a list of the current .bar files that you have on your PlayBook. You can download .bar files directly to your PlayBook and localbar2 will automatically find them for you and list them there.
Enter the address you noted from your BlackBerry earlier, and enter it into the section called "Proxy Address" It is important to note that you must enter it exactly how it is shown on your BlackBerry device to include the port section :12000 so it will look something like this 192.168.1.12:12000 .
Next, enter your PlayBooks password in the "This device's password" section. This is the password you created in step 3. Then select a .bar file from the left and click on "install"
If successful you will see an installation progress bar showing the completion percentage. It can take a while for the installation process so sit back and grab some coffee.
Option2: Using A Proxy On Your LAN
This is by far the better option as it is much faster and more successful.
Things you will need:
- localbar2.bar
- Your Computer's IP address
- Privoxy (proxy software for computer)
Step1: Install localbar2
The steps for installing localbar2 are identical to Option1,so please refer to Step1 ofthat section.
Step2: Prepare Your Computer
The first thing you need to do in preparing your computer is to install the Proxy software on your computer. In this tutorial we will be using Prixoy there are a few out there, but I just prefer this one. The installation process is fairly straight forward, and the default options will be suffice for most people. Once installed we need to do a little bit of configuration from within the Privoxy application.
Make sure Privoxy is running, you can check the status by looking for the "P" icon down in the lower right corner of your desktop. Right click and navigate to Edit --> Main Configuration. You will then see the following config file:
Now don't get intimidated by all this text were going to skip through a lot of it. In the meantime we need get your computers IP address. The easiest way to do this is to click on the Start button ---> run or search on Windows vista/7 then enter the following "cmd" then press enter. You will be presented with the black command line screen. On the blinking cursor type in the command "ipconfig" you will then be presented with a screen similar to the following screen:
The number you're looking for is under the IPv4 Address section or in Windows XP the IP Address section. Take note of that number and close the window.
Now its back to the Privoxy config file. On your keyboard hit Ctrl and then "F" this will bring up the following box:
In the Find box enter the words shown in the picture above "listen-address" and click on "Find Next" until you reach the following section:
Now replace the numbers to the right of the words "listen-address" with the IP Address you noted earlier. Make sure to include the port :8118 at the end.
Take note of this address you will need it later. Close the text file and save it. Exit Privoxy by right clicking the "P" icon down by the clock and selecting the option to "Exit Privoxy". Now open Privoxy back up and allow it to run in the background.
Step 3 Installing A Bar File
Now that we have prepared our PlayBook and computer its time to install a .bar file. For this example I will be installing a .bar file from our
Download Centre PlayBook Apps & Games section.
From your PlayBook head on over to our Download Centre navigate to the
PlayBook Apps & Games section. For this tutorial I will be installing TweetDeck. Next click on the icon in the download section and then click on download. You will then be presented with the following screen:
Leave all the defaults and click Save. Now open up localbar2 and you should see the Tweetdeck.bar file listed on the left-hand side. You will also see a "Proxy Address" box, here you will enter the numbers you noted earlier in the Privoxy configuration file. In addition you must enter your PlayBooks password in the device password section, this was the password you set when preparing the PlayBook. The end results should look like this:
Make sure the bar files is highlighted and click the install button. If all goes well you will then be presented with the following installation successful screen:
That's it! You can now download bar files over the air. Happy downloading.
