5 Tips To Personalize Your BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0

With the release of BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0, you may be wondering what simple ways are there to help you personalize your new fresh OS? Below are 5 tips to help you get started and become more familiar with your PlayBook. Be sure to leave a comment below if you have a tip of your own that you'd like to share with the community!

    1. Organizing the Home screen

With the introduction of the new Home screen in BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0, you have some additional options to customize just how your Home screen is organized. Use the tips below to customize and personalize your Home screen layout to your desired preferences.

    Move an icon
    – Touch and hold the icon until it starts pulsing, then drag the icon to its new location. To move the icon to another panel or create a new one, just drag the icon to the side of the screen.

    Add icons to the dock
    – Touch and hold the icon until it starts pulsing, then drag it to the dock. If the dock contains six icons already, you will need to remove one of the icons off the dock before adding another.

    Creating a folder
    – Drag an icon on top of another icon to create a folder. You can drag folder icons to the dock as well.

    Removing a folder
    – Touch and hold a folder icon until it starts to pulse, then tap on the trashcan icon. Any icons within the folder will be returned to the Home screen.

Renaming a folder – Open a folder, then touch and hold the folder name. When prompted, enter the new name followed by tapping “Rename”.

    2. Set a custom wallpaper

The next time you snap a photo using the camera on the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet or receive an image via email that you’d like to set as your wallpaper, complete the steps below.
    1. Open the Pictures app
    2. Select a picture you want to use as your wallpaper
    3. Swipe down from the top bezel to reveal the menu items and tap “Set as Wallpaper”

    3. Specify your desired keyboard settings

BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 introduces a few changes to the keyboard that will help you type quickly and more accurately. Customize the keyboard using the options below to get the experience you prefer.

Keyboard Feedback – Toggle the slider to set a desired volume level of your typing whenever you are using the keyboard.

    Keypress popup
    – If this setting is enabled while typing, you’ll be able identify what key you are tapping on.

    Show predictions and suggestions
    – I love the new prediction and suggestions feature, which gets smarter over time as it learns your typing habits and choice of words. In the screenshot below you can see an example of the predictive entry feature working in Documents To Go:

    Automatically correct as I type
    – Enabling this feature allows the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet to correct contractions, misspellings, and character replacements as well as create smart sentences. In case you are curious, smart sentences occur when you use the space key twice, and a period is inserted with the next letter automatically capitalized.

    Spell Check
    – BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 includes built-in spell checking that you can optionally disable. If enabled, you can choose to ignore acronyms, case as well as words with numbers.

    Tip:
Need to use a special character or accent? Tap and hold a letter while typing to see various symbols and accents you can use!

    4. Give your BlackBerry PlayBook tablet a name

By default when setting up a BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, the network identification name and Bluetooth name are generated based on your tablet’s PIN. To make your tablet stand out, specify a tablet network name and Bluetooth device name using the steps below:

    Tablet Network Name
    1. On the Home screen, swipe down from the top bezel, or tap on the “Settings” icon
    2. Select “Storage & Sharing”, then tap “Properties” next to Network Identification
    3. Enter the desired name followed by tapping on “Back” to save the new name when you are finished
    Bluetooth Device Name
    1. On the Home screen, swipe down from the top bezel, or tap on the “Settings” icon
    2. Select “Bluetooth” followed by tapping on “Properties”
    3. Enter the desired name followed by tapping on “Back” to save the new name when you are finished
An important thing to keep in mind is if you change these names, make sure you remember them because you’ll need to reference them if you plan on using Wi-Fi Sharing or pairing another Bluetooth device with your BlackBerry tablet in the future.

    5. Personalize Sounds & Notifications

With the addition of the new Email, Contacts and Calendar apps there are a few changes to the Sounds & Notifications menu in BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0. Follow the steps below to customize your audio and visual notifications to desired settings.

    Master Volume
    – In addition to using the volume keys along the top of the BlackBerry tablet, you can also use the Master Volume slider to specify the volume level.

    Headphone Audio Boost
    – If you are using headphones with your BlackBerry tablet and want a higher volume level, enable the
“Headphone Audio Boost” feature. Keep in mind Headphone Audio Boost only works if your headphones are plugged in. Always be sure to keep your headphones at a safe volume level!

    Audio Notification
    – Specify the volume level of notifications for things such as messages, calendar entries and tasks. This setting is relative to the Master Volume setting; it does not override the Master Volume setting.

    Visual Notification
    – On top of Audio Notifications, you can also customize how visual notifications appear by selecting from the following options:
    • Glow Only – A red pulse will appear in the top left corner of the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet Home screen on the status bar (see screenshot below for an example)
    • LED Only – The red LED on the front of the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet will flash
    • Glow & LED – If you guessed both of the above, you’d be correct.

Hi, this is my first time on this forum, does any one know if it is possible to set the keyboard option to alpha-numeric as it does when you type in a password?

    Thanks Rene

Very NICE tips. As a PlayBook early adapter (won playbook before release in April 2011), I guess I took a lot these tips for granted.......very good job. Thank-you.
