How to get Skype on your BlackBerry PlayBook

As of yet there is no native Skype app for the BlackBerry PlayBook, but there is a nice workaround that allows you to use Skype from your PlayBook by taking advantage of Adobe Flash v10.3 support in the browser. The same goes for using GTalk, Yahoo, MSN, and a few others as well. How does it work? Simply go to http://imo.im/ from your PlayBook's browser and then sign in to one of the many messaging application options.

I tried it myself, and the Skype calling works pretty good. The PlayBook's QNX microphone picked up the sound very well, and the speed was pretty fast, not much delay. Let us know if you give it a try, and how it works for you?

I tried it and it works well for voice and text. After several attempts of trying video chat I noticed that it would only work if the Skype user on the PC follows a link to imo.

I tried to call a phone but it appears the Skypeout calls don't work.

Yep, I noticed the same, as I just tried calling my brother on his cell. It's a start until we can get a official Skype app for PlayBook.

Will you get an official Skype app?
I thought Verizon has Skype contracted for all mobile apps.

Thats why AT&T, T-MO and Sprint and others must use IM+ Pro and such for Skype.
Only Verizon customers get Skype mobile.

I have Skype Mobile for my phone as I'm with Verizon, but don't know if Verizon will offer Skype Mobile for the 4G PlayBook.

I really hope they bring Skype to the PlayBook and not just the 3/4G versions. I'd really love to see OoVoO as well. I actually prefer OoVoO over Skype.

I have never used OoVoO, how do you prefer it over Skype?

Actually it is VERY similar to Skype in that you can call computer to mobile device and vice versa but where I like it better is that it uses less bandwith, it has better picture quality and to conference call with up to 6 people is free compared to Skype. I've also used Skype and OoVoO on Android devices and it works sooo much better. Idk how they compare performance wise on an iPhone or iPod Touch but I imagine they both work pretty good. Again, my main reason is the bandwith and video quality is much better and laslty because OoVoO is not attached exclusively to one carrier.

I forgot to add that there is a way to add your contacts from Skype and I think, not 100% sure because I haven't tried it yet but you can call Skype contacts from within OoVoO and even receive threads and updates from FaceBook on it as well. You should try it and do reveiw on it, it's awesome!

oovoo isn't available for BlackBerry smartphones. Skype is at least available for BlackBerry smartphone users that have Verizon. I also don't see any plans for oovoo to make their app for any BlackBerry devices.

Have you tried oovoo through the PlayBook's browser?

    Skype on Playbook

Tried this and the short is, it is painful...does not do video at all and you cannot get it to save your password and in addition it wants you to try to type in an almost impossible chatter thing that is really hard to do on PP....all to say 2 0ut of 10maybe

Nice thing is that Skype should be coming out with a PB app soon.

Thanks....while I have been a BB advocate for years, I am starting to wonder with all the goings on with Rim, Apples progees and constant change, am I in the position I was some years back when PalmPilot could just not navigate the future and held onto to old ideals thinking people would not change? I think I shall return the playbook.... even though for some reason I hate to say this...kinda feel like I hav been deserted by a good old friend ....ha

There's an app available on App World called ReelPortal Private which allows you to video chat easily. Just go onto it, put in your first name, give your chatroom a name, and tell your friends to go to reelportal.com to enter into your video chat room. You can have 4-5 people on at a time - no need to create an account or download anything !!! Goodbye Skype !!
