Discuss: Lara Croft And The Guardian Of Light

I could not have been more exited to see a classic video game character once again come back to life. Lara Croft has been the face of the popular Tomb Raider series and has been the bad girl of video game characters since 1996. If your like me then you probably grew up playing this game on the PC. This time Lara makes her makes her way to the BlackBerry PlayBook, in the title called The Guardian Of Light.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light game has actually been around since September of 2010 and was the first of the Tomb Raider series to not have the traditional Tomb Raider branding. Instead Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix wanted to separate themselves from the Tomb Raider games for something a bit more fresh. I was equally excited to see the legendary game makers Square Enix making games for the PlayBook. Does this mean we could see Final Fantasy on the PLayBook. I hope so!

The game is a steal at $3.99 compared to other games in App World, but sometimes you simply get what you paid for. The download is rather large about 397 MB, but expected as it more graphics intensive than the average game on the PlayBook. After about a 5 -10 minute install I was finally ready to play.

I was actually really impressed on how quickly the game loaded and how easy it was to play. One of the things I did noticed right away was the default sound was really low. So I quickly adjusted that in games settings and it was not an issue. I was also greeted with some nice cut scenes that delivered a great story that kept up with typical Tomb Raider like fashion.

Game controls make full use of the PlayBooks touch screen by offering dual control methods. Action controls are to the right and movement controls are to the left. I found the movement to become quite natural after a while and the shooting methods to be a pleasant surprise.

It would not be a Lara Croft game without some puzzle solving, and some extreme movement. Ledge hanging and extreme jumping are both available and go well with the overhead camera view. The shooting method is unique as well as it is multi-directional, and you can shoot in any direction.

Now what about graphics? Anytime you have a game ported to a portable device there is always the fear of loosing some graphical eye candy. However, this game embraces the PlayBooks GPU and takes advantage of what it can do. Stunning maybe not, but serious consideration needs to be made when comparing it to other games currently available on the the Playbook. It is without a doubt one of the top ten games in the graphics department and some may argue a top five contender.

Epic game play, superb graphics, and a classic story line has earned this game a 8 out of 10 stars. This is a must have for any gamer and certainly worth purchasing.
