Fun With FCEUXpb, Play NES Games On Your PlayBook
Retro gaming has always been a favorite thing for me to do on my spare time. There is nothing like breaking out the old Nintendo Entertainment System and playing a few classic levels of Super Mario Bros. Yes, you could always blow the dust off that old NES or SNES system, and spend a bit of time trying to get the game to work or you could use an emulator. Emulators have been around for quite a while, and exist on almost every platform. Perhaps one of the most popular NES emulators FCEUX
, has been around since 2008, and is one of the most solid NES emulators out there.
I was excited to see that this emulator had ported its way on to the BlackBerry PlayBook not to long ago, and was anxious to try it out. I was able to easily side-load the .bar file on to my PlayBook and within minutes was enjoying some classic gaming.
Setup and configuration for this app is really easy. It requires no rooting or
any fancy hacking of your device; thanks to froggyface
Use DDPB tool to install the bar file via side loading
Once installed you'll need to put your .nes roms in the z:\misc\roms\nes

Game saves and other FCEUX configuration data are stored in z:\misc\fceux\.fceux
note: please do not ask for ROM's or post any.
this app will not run
unless you have at least one valid ROM in the specified path.
Movement throughout the app is relatively simple.
Tap the top left of the screen to load another rom in the directory.
NES pad like layout on bottom of screen in landscape mode. You can swipe down to see controls and move keys around.
That's all there is to it. Now you can enjoy hours of classic NES gaming. Everything runs surprisingly smooth and crisp. Take a look at this quick video showing it running on my PlayBook.
