Yes- it is connected. No, it did not reboot.

The .bat ext should reboot your BlackBerry.
Try manually doing a hard reset on your device now.

Well, I spent the last few hours uninstalling and installing every copy of DM I could find- even dug out the disk that came with the phone and installed off of there. Still get the error. I am completely at a loss and have no idea what to do next. It's the only computer I have and really need to backup the device as it has bricked on me before. No other words of wisdom folks?
Well you said that you had another PC that would see your BlackBerry.
Could you install Desktop Manager on that PC and see if you are able to find any progress?

i did a research on this issue and all i found, and btw, i am pretty sure it is the case, you have a corrupted file from the original installation, most probably you will need to do a clean uninstall and then re install, this is an old procedure but sometimes is the the only way it works feel free to ask if you need any help....
The “clean” uninstall procedure removes all traces of the BlackBerry Desktop Software. To perform a clean uninstall of the BlackBerry Desktop Software, you must perform the following tasks:
Task 1 - Uninstall the BlackBerry Desktop Software
Complete the following steps:
1. Close the Desktop Manager application.
2. Open the Control Panel, or use revo uninstaller, either one
3. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon, or highlight DM in revo screen and click uninstall, follow steps until finishes doing its job.( procede with the following steps on task 1 if you are not using revo)
4. Select BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
5. Click Change/Remove.
6. On the InstallShield Wizard window, click the Remove option.
7. Click Next.
8. On the Confirm Uninstall window, click OK.
9. On the InstallShield Wizard window, click Finish.
Task 2 - Delete the Research In Motion Folders in the Registry
Complete the following steps:
Warning: Modifying the computer registry can cause substantial damage to the Microsoft Windows® operating system. Document and back up the existing registry entries prior to implementing any changes.
1. Click Start > Run.
2. Type Regedit, and then click OK.
3. In Registry Editor, delete the Research In Motion folder located in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\.
4. Delete the Research In Motion folder located in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHNINE\Software\.
5. Close the Registry Editor.
Task 3 - Delete the Research In Motion Folders on Your Hard Drive
Complete the following steps:
Warning: Modifying the computer system or application files can cause substantial damage to applications, services, or the Microsoft Windows operating system. Document and back up the existing system or application files prior to implementing any changes.
1. Open Windows Explorer.
2. Delete the Research In Motion folder in C:\Program Files\.
3. Delete the Research In Motion folder in C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Application Data\.
If you are unable to see the application folder, it might be a hidden system folder. To make the folder visible, select the Show Hidden Files and Folders option in Windows Explorer.
Task 4 - Delete the Pumatech Shared Folder on Your Hard Drive
Complete the following steps:
1. Open Windows Explorer.
2. Delete the Pumatech Shared folder in C:\Program Files\Common Files\.
Note: Any synchronization software for other personal digital assistants (PDA) using the Pumatech Shared folder will need to be reinstalled after a successful installation of BlackBerry Desktop Software.
Task 5 - Restart the Computer
Restart the computer after completing the previous tasks.

I am installing the DM software on hubby's PC. I was trying to avoid it as he gets pissy when I alter his computer (and it is infernally slow!). However, he has a Curve so he really should appreciate it! I will see if his machine recognizes my device...
Just for the record- I was working on the other procedure detailed above- I had no RIM folder in C:\Program Files\ or in C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Application Data and no Pumatech folder anywhere that I could find...

That's strange...
This could be her problem then, DM is not installing properly if those folders are not present.
However, the computer should still recognize the bb. Mepascal, before firemare looks into a warranty replacement or pays for it, we need to remember that she has connected to her husbands computer and the blackberry was recognized without DM installed. I honestly believe that the problem lies in her laptop and corrupted drivers.
As mentioned earlier, the easiest and most efficient way to resolve this is to get a copy of Norton Utilities, completely erase any hint of RIM from the laptop, load DM yet again and hopefully the drivers will load properly.
Firemare, my suggestion would be to reload DM from the CD you got with the phone, and then update through the help tab in DM.
