Basically I will tell you that you have DM corrupted installation, you will probably need to do one of this things:
1 download the drivers from blackberry.com, if you go to dm downloads page it gives you the option to download just the drivers, or

2 uninstall DM, reboot pc, download and install fresh copy of DM, reboot pc and retry...

Would be a good idea if you can use a registry cleaner after you uninstall DM

    1. I tried to do this yesterday and when I tried to install the drivers, I got an error message telling me that I had an older version installed and needed to uninstall before I could install.

    2. I did this twice (w/o the registry cleaner) yesterday.

    ???

Can't provide the links, but google REVO uninstaller, get the free version install to pc, the open it, and uninstall DM using option 4, do not reboot the pc iyour asked, follow on screen prompts and once you're done reboot and re install DM, get the newer available, should work better

Ok- I am near the end of the REVo uninstall- it "Found Leftover Files and Folder" and want to know if I want to check them and delete them. They are:
    Desktop_CRASH.DMP
    Desktop/ERRORLOG.TXT
    pool.bin

    Delete or not?

Afaik pool.bin is created by the device manager and should be safe to be deleted - you could try renaming it first and see if everything is ok...and if so, you can delete it.

You very well may have a BlackBerry Storage Activation issue.
Are you sure that your Mass Storage Mode is enabled?

My husband's computer recognizes it as a USB device. I don't have DM installed on that machine.

Firemare, the only thing left to do I think is to get a program like Norton Suite or something similar. It will be the easiest and most efficient way to remove all traces of DM from your computer and then try reloading DM again. Short of that, your drivers may be pooched in such a way that you may need to have someone else look at it.

    Let's try this firemare...

Is this a Laptop or a PC?
If it's a PC and your mouse and keyboard are USB then upon reboot you will need to power down and unplug then plug your mouse and keyboard then reboot.
Otherwise if they are P2 connections then you can do the following.

Disconnect (unplug) all peripherals connected to USB
    ports on PC.
Run devmgmt.msc and at he bottom you'll see the USB controllers
    listed.
Rightclick and click Uninstall, do check if any ports are disabled.
If disabled, they'll stay that way. Reboot your PC and all USB ports will
be auto reinstalled, this will also show if you have any driver problems.
You can then connect your devices one at a time to check if any give you a
    problem. Good luck.

I will try that, but, to add to the mix, I now cannot charge my device on the cradle either. It charged fine on a car charger at work last night, but I got an error on the device when I placed it in the charger when I got home.

Then, when I just now plugged it into the home charger, I got a white screen with tiny letters (an error or some sort?) that was gone before I could read it and then it shut down. It did reboot and is currently charging on the home adapter. Very strange.

Ok, it's a laptop- no peripherals. Colour me stupid, but I am assuming that devmgmt.msc is a DOS command. I have no idea how to run it! I used to know how to get to a DOS command line, but have no idea anymore...
