Thread: Troubleshooting a service

I've been trying to track down an issue with my computer for almost 2 hours now. I'm not sure why but there is a service that keeps hanging my computer. There is still some functionality. I can press CTRL+ALT+DEL and restart my computer. And I can move my mouse around But there is still something causing the normal desktop to not respond to actions. I went into safe mode and switched the configuration to the diagnostic option which only loads essential services. This works.

But I have no idea what service is the cause of the problem. Does any one have a good way of troubleshooting what service may be the issue? I have already tried turning of themes, and that didn't help.

I am running Windows 7 RC by the way.

Also, it's not possible for me to look at the running services without my computer hanging.

Download Windows Process Explorer (procexp.exe) you can view your running processes. Great trouble shooting utility.

Think I found the problem. Stupid ass spyware! Working on removing it now.

my home pc... i have a question about.. i can use firefox.. I can do most anything but i can not open IE i can not open any windows folder... not control panel not anything... I cant open my computer, my documents... nothing.. when I try to open if I open task manager and watch I get iedw.exe along with internet explorer, then it starts dr watson and it eventually craps out and then it shuts it all down... any suggestions

Did you reboot? Run anti malware and virus scans? What OS are you running?

yes rebooted... ran virus scan, ran anti spyware... cant remember what the name of my spyware is... XP on my desktop. I also tried restoring as far back as my last reformat but the issue is still there.

How do you feel about reformatting?

BTW, iedw.exe is the IE crash program. Not spyware.

... Sigh.. I can reformatt but there is a ton of stuff i need to get off thats why I did a restore, but i can not open up folders to transfer it to a usb card or anything, but if i use like email with attachment i can see the stuff.

if I try to boot in safe mode it goes half way through the loading process and gives me BSOD

tghat would be great cept it flashes so fast that all i see is blue...black and gone

Read the last page of that article. It explains how to view the errors in event viewer.
