I had to restore my laptop to factory condition. After doing all that Vista's Windows update is telling me I have 87 updates dating back to 2007, most of them security updates. I let it do its thing twice and both times it froze on the Welcome screen after about a half hour of updating. Thats as far as it would go and I had to restore it to factory condition both times. I was doing the updates with Wi-fi so I thought maybe my signal was dropping (which it sometimes does). So I plug in my ethernet cable and now I'm going to try it again. My question is, do I need to download all those security updates or can I just select the latest ones?

once you install the above you will have some miscellaneous ones that will still need to be installed. But sp2 should take care of the majority of them. I have found when letting windows do the updates and it combines all those at one time. It leads to the exact issue you are describing.
