I have been using Avira AntiVir for a long time and consider it the best FREE AntiVirus out there. Much better than Microsoft Security Essentials (Resource Hog) or Avast! AntiVirus or AVG.

Its scanning engine is based on the Kaspersky Engine

After you install Avira, to disable the Ads which show up after every update, just disable the Avira Protection Temporarily, then download and install the below file, run it and disable the ads, then reenable the Avira active monitoring again

I hate that some of these freewares can become spamware. How is Avira with ads?

It gives you 1 ad after you update. But I never get it by simply installing the following file and you never ever get any ads anymore.

Before you install it, you need to disable Avira temporarily, install it, then re-enable it as Avira will flag that Ad Disabler as a Virus since they want to force you to see their ads :P
