Question Can Facebook Last Another 5 Years?

I was looking at some new and happen to come accross this:

    Facebook at Age Five

The social networking site now boasts 250 million users, but has yet to make a single dollar in profit. Five years after its inception, a look at whether it can last another five.
Facebook better start earning some money or something! I wonder how they stay up at the moment mfg:

Considering MySpace still exists, I would say yes.

I think it took Amazon something like 7 years to break even. I don't see Facebook going away anytime soon, unfortunately.

My guess it will eventually be sold off to either Microsoft or Google and continue to exist in some format or another, probably with a different name.

Facebook will only stay popular if they continue to reinvent themselves. To do this costs money. The troubling thing is how spammed up and virus laden Facebook has become. They also need to get a little more selective with these crap-apps they allow. Word to the wise, if you use Facebook buy the best in virus protection software, etc. With that said, I'm a huge fan and my Facebook BB app is in my top 5 most used apps. Twitter gets more of my time these days though.

Facebook is here to say. There financials will start showing a profit. They are one of older social networks and with 250 million subscribers I can't imagine it going anywhere.

I did a lot of web and programming stuff around the time Amazon was first starting to getting bigger and more well-known. People used to hold them up as an great business and wanted me to help emulate them. I'd ask them if they knew Amazon wasn't actually turning a profit and hadn't since it was created, and none of them did.

For years Amazon wasn't making money selling books. They were losing money and the only way they stayed afloat is they kept selling access to their customer list to other companies. Everytime they were low on funds I'd read another article about another company who'd invested in them to gain access to the client list. If Amazon hadn't kept selling their list they would've gone bankrupt and died way back when. Funny, but that seems to have been edited out of their company history now that they've survived and become successful.

As far as Facebook goes, didn't Microsoft invest a bunch of money in them recently for a small share of the company? I think Microsoft has a vested interest in keeping them afloat since they want their hand in a social networking site...or two.

I'll bet anyone that facebook is sold in the next 2 years, they are probably waiting to get the value back up over 10 Billion where it was 2 years ago...then who knows what will happen after that, but it will most likely be a publicly offered Company and turning profit...

domain-b.com : Digital Sky's stock purchase values Facebook at $6.5 billion

It may last 5 more yrs., but nowhere the popularity that is presenting now. ICQ was huge, then it was bought by AOL, and went to shit real fast because of the advertising, and every gimmick that can lure you into paying in one form or another.

With the flow of technology embedded in the internet, nothing last forever. Something new will come along that people will crave (ie. facebook) and then it will fade once something else even better will replace it. Kinda like real world.

Used Friendster for three years, then Facebook came and crushed it to dust.

If Facebook can survive for years to come, I think it will come down to the applications and games it provides, without them Facebook is nothing on its own. I've seen people updating their status and photo albums less and less these days, they only come to Facebook to play Mafia Wars and the like... So it's like Facebook is no longer a social network but a social GAMING network now.
