TN texting while driving law started July 1st

Tennessee passed it's no-texting-while-driving law and it went into effect on July 1st. Officers will visually watch for people violating this law, pull them over, and issue them a $50 citation. The criteria that law enforcement is using is if the driver looks at their phone longer than the time it would take to dial a phone number or answer a call. Guess they should really call it no-doing-anything-on-your-phone-while-driving because if you're surfing the web, tweeting, facebooking, etc. you will appear to be in violation. I live in Kentucky but my primary office is in TN so I will definitely be affected by this law. I realize it's a good safety thing but I feel like my rights are being affected. Not sure if I agree with this or not... Any thoughts?

I think this is a great law. I heard about it too. Although even since the 1st I still find myself BBM'ing my wife on the way home. Got to get trained not to do it I guess.

    Thanks for reminding me Morgan

    Nice find Morgan :fing02:

I have mixed feeling about this as well. When I was working I drove all over Idaho so I spent 10 hours + a day in my car. I can't tell you all the idiots that I saw on a daily basis either cause accidents or almost cause while playing with their phone. As a father it makes me nervous that my kids will be out there on the road with these people. No for the other side I was always on my blackberry :lmao: but for some reason I can pay attention to the BB and the road

    Thats what i thought.

Throw in some extra bright California sun right over the over pass, blocking out the stop light, and a BBM message that just had the best timing. I was still doing 45 when i noticed the light was red and there was a car stoped there!!

Anyone seen the movie 7 Pounds? Did you notice the BB? That cured me from using my BB while driving.

I think it's a great law, at least here in California the stats are staggering as to how many accidents and lives could have been prevented. If you need to BBM someone or write a message, pull over. 30 seconds lost is much better than a lifetime worth of loss.

Everyone was fine. He had a suv so barely any damage, just the bumper. My GF's car crumpled. I should've got a pic of the inside!

There are many laws in the united states trying to prevent texting while driving. However, Mr. Perdue will recognize that while his state’s anti-texting while driving bill may not be perfect, signing is a necessary start to help make roadways safer and save lives in the process.
