Thread: US continues to ban texting while driving

Remember our post about the stun gun maker's app to prevent your kid from texting while driving to be released this summer?

Well, US jurisdiction seems to be much faster than the developers of this app. According to Reuters a texting prohibition for all truck and bus drivers was announced on Tuesday, just one month after a similar ban for all drivers of governmental cars.

Don't get caught, or carry up to $ 2'750 - which is not that expensive compared to the estimated 200'000 accidents per year caused by texting drivers. A controlled study done in 2009 by CarAndDriver (see picture above) already revealed, that in worst case the reaction distance of reading and/or texting drivers increased by 100 meters and more. Just imagine a child crossing the street some 20 meters in front of such a driver...

Funny as the Highway Loss Data Institute just released their study that shows in 4 areas where cell use while driving is banned, it did NOT reduce the number of accidents:

I can't agree with you more. For the average person, holding and talking on a cell phone is no more dangerous than changing the radio station. I believe the cell phone laws are stupid and cause more problems than they correct, but big brother knows best :aargh4:. I do think that texting while driving is a different story and is very dangerous but the only reason to be texting is because some idiot said you can't hold the phone and talk! :duh:

If there is a ban on talking or texting while driving, how are we going to cull the herd down of people that can't multi-task? Its bad enough our cars will stop for us and won't allow the brakes to lock up if we panic stop. Damn, how will we get rid of all the uncoordinated people?
