Thread: 20,000 text messages by man's daughter!!

20,000 text messages in one month by man's daughter, and this father nor his wife was aware of the text messages. By the way, the cellular company is Verizon Wireless.

One thing's for sure, in my opinion cellular companies should do a better job at explaining these add-ons and also what you can do to turn them off to make sure you don't get charged. What are your thoughts????

WOW...ouch. My mom is on my cell plan (she was laid off from work in December, so I'm paying all her bills for now), and I got her a BB Pearl with unlimited texting, because she texts like crazy. Well, I just got the March bill in the mail, and everything seemed fine, (I check the bill for all three lines and discrepancies), until her bill alone was $267, from a normal $109 a month. Come to find out that my 14 year old sister has been sneaking and using my mom's phone to use "Premium" texting services, such as "Joke a day", Horroscope a day, Special ringtones, Funny graphics, etc...ranging from $9.99 to $19.99 a month. I remember putting a block on her line to disable "Premium" Services, but for some reason, my sister was still able to make those charges. I called Verizon to Biatch, and they told me that they will check into it, and they "MAY" refund those charges. I asked them....MAY? I have the block on her account, and I was told it would be investigated....until then, I have to pay this bill.

Needless to say, I'm pissed off at Verizon. I'm not mad at my mom, but I told my sister that if she EVER does this again, I'm going to put her fingers in a Vice and break each one of them. I told her that she better go and pawn her IPod and sell some of her CD's to cough up the money.

That's almost a $150 increase in just one month. Yes, I truly think the companies must do better to help protect against such things from happening. Your situation is a point well taken. And what makes it so bad is that you did put a block but the block was somehow circumvented

I saw that on the news. This kind of happened with me with Tmobile. I switched back over to the Blackberry data plan from the G1 plan and they forgot to add txtng and my bill for the month was 2,400.00 Im like WHAT!?! ha, they took care of it though.

lol i bet she aint getting another phone until shes 18. if she does shes getting one of those phones that you can only call like 3 people. damn 10000 texts, i think the most i sent was like 4000 and i thought that was alot

Well, if she were my daughter she wouldn't be getting another phone either. She could not have been doing anythings besides texting.... no home work, no sleeping, no eating.... I cannot imagine 10,000 texts in a month's time.... And you blindman4556, you sent 4000.... I can't imagine that either... lol...

Well, if she were my daughter she wouldn't be getting another phone either. She could not have been doing anythings besides texting.... no home work, no sleeping, no eating.... ya i no i almost shit my pants with 4000, luckily at the time i had like 1500 texts so it wasnt so bad on the bill, it still a shitty bill. 3 days later i signed up for the unlimited texts lol....and someone double check my math but she would have to send 1 text every 2.16 minutes for that whole month...i think your right, i dont think she slept and she probably texted with one hand and ate with the other lol damn

Taking into consideration a standard 30 day month, and all standard texts.

Just straight data:
20,000 texts in one month (aka 30d, or 720 hrs, or 43,200 min)
= 666.67 txts/day
= 27.78 txts/hr
= 0.46 txts/min
= 2.16 min/txt

Now, lets take out 6 hrs per day for sleep and 40 hrs per week for school
20,000 texts in one month (aka 30d, or 380 hrs, or 22,800 min)
= 666.67 txts/day
= 52.63 txts/hr
= 0.88 txts/min
= 1.14 min/txt

How can you NOT notice your child either sending or receiving a text every minute? And this is EVERY DAY. I have seen my wife run up 168 texts in one day, and EVERYONE in our group noticed it.

I think if I remember from the video, she sent 10K, and received 10K...she didn't send 20K herself....but still...how can a parent NOT notice this....
I agree with you. This is why Cellphones should be banned from being taken out of a purse, bookbag, in class. Better yet, install a blocking device in classrooms, like they do in some theaters, so that the phone can only be used in the Hallways or other communal areas of the school, but not in class.

That makes sense, but it is still a total of 20K texts. 10K in and 10K out. with those numbers, that means she was sending one every 2 minutes, and receiving one every 2 minutes. Still, how can you not notice that? And let's go back and add in the 6 and 40, and say she was during school. How did a teacher not see her sending a text every 4 minutes and receiving a text every 4 minutes, and I am willing to bet that it was other people in her class texting her. And what about during tests? Did the teacher just turn a blind eye and let them text away?

I just still cant fathom this. I mean, I used to text a lot. And I think my highest month was like 6 or 7 thousand. Let me tell you, even with those numbers, it consumes you. I was laid off at the time (Construction), but like all you guys have said, everyone noticed that I was doing it.

Hmmmm, I wonder....would the Storm screen withstand that type of abuse? 10K messages in one month? Hmmmmmm.......

Are you up to test it?...lol I am sure RIM would let you have a new one if it broke. "I was testing the durability of your device in light of recent activity."

My pal from schoool's daughter who just told her parents that she no longer wants to continue with collage (1st year) has run up the bill due to texting and the parents do keep an eye on the bill. However they did sit around and watch at her recent 19th BD party when she and all her friends there sat around on the couch and text each other!!!! I asked him why didn't you suggest they try and talk face to face and check the phones at the door?? If the bill is paid each month on time VZ is not doing to give a hoot about the amount of a bill. They should however flag and notify if charges seeem to be out of normal amounts seen by the account. But that would mean being responsible and having the interests of their customers at heart. Can't let the family or mom and dad of the hook either by not monitoring the use by their children knowing this is what they do and how they communicate. Ahhhh....life...at....home. ;-)

i no exatctly what your saying about texting each other when there right next to that person. im 20 so about 3 years ago i was still in high school. and i cant tell you how many times i went to a party to see girls just texting away and worst part was they were texting the person that was across the room...y dont you get off your ass and talk to em in person, if its private conversation, go old school and step outside where no 1 is at

That is why they made those pay as you go phones. LOL

Yea, also allows them to clique up and talk about each other without having to say it face to face. Getting pretty ugly out there.......

Yes, I have to agree with you... we are losing that face-to-face interaction.... I see the very same things with email too.. My boss at work never calls... except on the rarest of occasions.... and he sends like 10-12msgs each day to us as a group, and sends a TON of emails to others... he sits at his desk and shoots out freagging emails... arrrrrrrrrrrrrgh
