Completely unnecessary. As I have said before, by responding to all the stupidity, all it does is bring the stupidity to the forefront and make people take notice of it. If RIM would have just ignored it, it would have been just what it should be......yesterday's news. Now, anyone that missed the crap from yesterday are going to be searching for the article that RIM's CEO felt it was so important to respond to.
Personally, I don't see why everyone is getting so worked up. It was an opinion piece for frig's sake.....who the hell cares? Everyone is entitled to an opinion, that's what makes western civilization great.
I think it's a nice gesture for a CEO to stick beside and stand up for their fans. Doesn't hurt, especially when RIM has been fending off attacks for the last couple years.
As CEO he did the right thing and I am convinced that a competing brand paied for this absolutely lousy and stupid article ! We all know that NYT has financial difficulties nevertheless they should refuse to print so much rubbish ! I am a second year old fan of BB after having had enough of the other totally unsecure systems on the market , BB saved my nervous system and health , thanks !

I'm with Downforce, I didn't even know about the article until I saw his response. It publicizes and adds merit to the article in my mind. Now I just feel sorry for the poor guy, between a rock and a hard place I guess.
What it does is show that the CEO of BBC/RIM actually cares what people think of his product. He wrote that article on our behalf. Would you rather have a person in charge that doesn't care? Some would see this failure to respond as another nail in the BB coffin. I would suggest that is worse than other people seeing the article, which wouldn't be a negative thing as they would see it for the one sides unbalanced trash that it is. I have college kids write more balanced articles than that tosh. In my classroom, as a for example its split between BB & android with the odd iFoney. Now that's a better balance
D
Nope.....it would, however, be nice to see a CEO spend their day running a multi-billion dollar company instead of wasting time responding to someone's opinion.......an opinion btw that everyone has unanimously agreed is nothing but pure crap. Sure, someone else prolly wrote the response, but Thorsten would have had to read and approve it before submitting it to NYT. Those are precious moments out of what is surely a busy day. Precious moments taken away from what could have been spent making sure that every I is dotted and every T is crossed on EVERY detail of the much hyped device that he is hinging the entire future of his company on doesn't get delayed............YET AGAIN.

I love my BB
I love my BBI am agree with DMTG. I want to say it because here, in France, the big daily newspapers and computer sites take back this article of NYT completely and introduce it as being result of revealing inquiry than in USA people is ashamed of their BlackBerry. This article and what they do with it here, can give fright and can make damage, because who wants to be ashamed? This article is predominantly given as it is in France, its contents is not called into question by our journalists, sometimes thought ridiculous in comments, it creates a hole and makes think that BlackBerry becomes a mark of old objects the press of which begins laughing. In France, the answer of CEO of RIM is ignored. I discover his answer here, in BBOS. I am admiring. I think that this CEO and its reponse give to RIM a face and a word. To represent the employees, efforts, the users, it defends better RIM from attacks, it joined RIM and us. Please excuse my poor french...or Babel-english
