Thread: New member using Apple Mac instead of a PC

I can almost hear the 'Boos and Hissing' as I mention the word Mac OS on here.

I've just bought my kids a Playbook each and they're already gnawing my ears off to download this and that, mainly stuff from the App World that costs rather than being free from the Android Market. Naturally I'll be having non of that and started out this morning to see how to download apps/games for free. I was always a fan of downloading games their Nintendo DS consoles a few years ago till they grew out of them and the tablet market took off. COuple that with the fact the .nds files were getting harder and harder to source as sites were forced to stop freely giving away the download links etc.

So I initially found the way of doing it was looking (grimmly) impossible to do on a Mac and was only PC capable. I do have a PC but have always een Mac so wasn't a big fan of trying to do this on a PC.

I found a couple of links and instructionals on YouTube and low and behold there it was – a way of doing it on a Mac through the Terminal with a couple of command lines.

I downloaded a couple of Angry Bird .Bar files and followed the instructions and hey presto - my kids are now running the £3 GBP Angry Bird games for free.

Only problem is, any subsequent downloads are kicking up errors in the Terminal and I can't get anything else to upload.

I'm using the Developer Tools system to upload from my Mac but for some reason the Terminal is coming back with an Error: Unknown argument -

Not sure if anyone else has tried and done this on a Mac or come across and resolved this issue but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also looking for the best place to access the best volume of .bar files that don't mean I have to either use a PC and ddpb or sign up to a subscription service in order to download the files.

As a revise to my initial post, I've just downloaded a couple of .bar files from this site and noticed that they work. The thing I have also noticed is that the file names of those that DO work have no spaces in whereas those that failed to upload earlier did.

I'm still picking my way through this upload thing but is that the rule? Do the .bar files have to contain NO spaces?

You need to wrap the file names in quotes.

Eg: Angry Birds.bar becomes 'Angry Birds.bar'

That tells the terminal that it's a single file name instead different ones.

Sorry to disagree with you on this but all uploads since my last post have had no quote wrapped bar files. I think looking at it, the entire bar file had to be space free so basically:

Angry Birds Riov 1.4.4.bar became AngryBirdsRiov1.4.4.bar

Worked fine.

I'm still looking for the best place to get the largest selection of bar files from though if you can offer any help on this.

Thanks for the response though as I'm sure if I hadn't have done it my way, I would have certainly tried your method.

Yes, well that works because you've removed the spaces by renaming the file. Your question at the end of your post was:

So my answer to your question, which is correct, is to simply type in the name of the file with quotes around it. That's how the Bash terminal works for any command.

Of course, removing the spaces works but this is just a workaround.

Anyway, as long as you get them working - that's the important thing!

No I didn't - I skimmed over the part about playing the paid for Angry Birds. I thought he was using the inferior rubbishy slower one that's been doing the rounds.

Piracy is not cool - but if he wants to publicly admit that he plays pirated games so be it. In my defence, he'd already got the sideloading working without my help.

Still - must pay more attention.
