Blackberry should stand on their own

was speaking with a blackberry rep and was told that updates must go through the carrier to become effective. For example the 9700 Bold was provided with an update to OS6. Dependant upon which carrier you used governed when and if you could obtain this update. The rep told me that the carrier controlled the update. This is not a question of compatibility it is a question of the carrier adding their data to the changes. This meant if you dealt with certain carriers in Canada that you might wait a month or two to obtain an update. This is wrong. I purchased a blackberry not a carrier and it is time users started to express their concern about this unwarranted control over you blackberry. If you own an i\phone you can update it without interference fro the carrier. Why not blackberry?:

    It does/can stand alone

    INSTRUCTIONS:
    1. Download the OS
    2. Back up data on Desktop Manager under Back up/restore option. NOTE: If you get an error during this process, clear your browser cache (Browser > Menu Key > options > cache operation > clear all of them)
    3. Back up your 3rd party apps.
    4. Disconnect your BB from Desktop Manager
    5. Download desired OS to your PC
    6. Install/run OS to PC
    7. delete vendor.xml file. It’s located in c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader
    8. Connect BB to Desktop Manager and it should
    9. Click Application Loader
    10. Click Update
    11. At this point, disconnect your computer from the internet
    12. Select the OS you would like to load and continue
    13. Do not unplug BB during the process. It will take around 20-90 minutes to complete upgrade.

Note: Make sure to back up your phone and third party apps prior to updating in case something goes wrong in the update process

Yes you may download various OS for blackberry devices. Blackberry does not support OS's if they are not official from the carrier. If you take a look at our download section you will find tons of OS downloads and even hybrid ones.

    Hello Mr. Skidoo, welcome!

Because certain carriers like to review the operating system and may not share the same standards by which they hold a OS release. For example, maybe they have carrier apps that need to be compatible with the OS.

Appreciate the comments BUT the iPhone is updated directly with Apple not with some carrier's approval or additions to the software. If you go to the carriers sites, certainly Rogers for one, you have seen tremendous advertising for the iphone 4/ipad etc and not nearly as much for Blackberry which disappoints met. To me let Rim supply the device and software and let the carrier supply the service. My wife hs the iphone 4 and when an up date comes out she gets it right then, not have to wait for some carrier to decide when they wish to release it to her as is the cause with my Bold.

The only way that will happen is if RIM doesn't allow carriers to install their own apps on the device when you get the phone. Like I was saying, Verizon isn't going to approve a OS from RIM if it causes a lot of issues with their carrier apps. This freedom of OS is more appealing to the carrier which in return gets RIM more business.

When you get an iPhone, there are no carrier apps installed automatically. This must be done manually. This gives Apple more control over the OS and makes everyone else scramble to make sure their apps are compatible when the OS is updated.
