It's not strange at all if one actually thinks about it.
We (AT&T customers) know that 2G selection worked with 282 but not 266, 291 or the betas of 5.0.
This hybrid is a mix of all of those releases.
The 2G selection functionality is contained in a 282 cod file that had to be replaced by another version to either add other functionality or make the hybrid stable. You have to lose one to gain the other.
Note that others (non-AT&T customers) have retained their 2G selection ability in this hybrid because their phones always have had this option available. IIRC, the only way to have that functionality present on AT&T is to actually go through the full blown unlocking procedure or to stick with plain, vanilla 282.
