Thread: Device Model Numbers and Meanings

I figured it would be a good idea to post this as it can help justify why devices have the numbers they have on the device. Most are GSM and that is where it becomes confusing because there are three models for GSM devices.

xx00 are GSM devices (can have WiFi and GPS)

xx10 are GSM, with GPS (only)

xx20 are GSM with WiFi (only)

xx30 are CDMA devices

xx50 iDEN Direct Connect + GPS + WiFi

Also keep in mind while unlocking. When you unlock your device, it is letting you move to another carrier. Your device comes locked to your carrier. CDMA (phones that end with xx30) can be unlocked to work on GSM and CDMA carriers, GSM (phones that end with xx00, xx10 or xx20) are not able to work on CDMA networks only GSM. I hope this helps members some up a few things, and more less for the new users.

Good job Stief! But I wonder about the Storm 2s model number now. Because it's rumored to be 9550, but that's a iDen device.

Sprint and Verizon have a ESN/MEID database and if your phone is not in it, they will not activate your phone. Alltel allowed any CDMA device before the VZW purchase. Not sure if they still do. Metro PCS is also another option but from what I've read, even though they sell the 8330 Curve, if you bring one from another company, you will not be able to obtain a BIS account. This may have changed.

No problem. Thanks for the welcome. I forgot to mention that the upcoming Tour should be able to run on a GSM provider as well (I think its a world phone). The Storm 9530 and the Tour 9630 will only be able to access the EDGE frequencies since the phones only include the 2100 HSDPA spectrum. If you want a touch screen BB and don't mind the 2.5G speeds, the Storm is worth it. Storm 2 is around the corner as well. I'd pass on the Tour and wait for the Magnum or the other three GSM BBs to be released this year (I hope). Also the 9500 Storm will only run on EDGE since it doesn't have the 1900/850 3G bands and the unique 1700 3G band from T-Mobile.
