    Hammerdown Monday: BlackBerry Traffic

On time. It's not just a jazzy catch phrase in the trucking industry. It's an absolute necessity. Kinda like breathing. If ya want to live, you gotta keep breathing. To keep your company alive, you gotta be on time.

Today I'm gonna let you greenhorns (noobs) in on a secret. How do us drivers make sure we get there on time? A Rand McNally Motorcarriers road atlas, a calculator, a notepad, and an intimate knowledge of Interstate highways and US highways. Or, at least that's how we used to do it, back when cellphones weren't smart.

Now we have our beloved Berry, and some of our hard work was left on the side of the road, with the release of BlackBerry traffic, a nifty little app from our favorite north of the border geniuses, Research In Motion. No more measuring miles on maps for me, no sir. I'll let my Berry do that for me.

Look at that, all I had to do was feed it an address. Oh, and look there, a couple of slow downs. Those yellow bars alert you to some traffic slow downs, thank the Lord and Mr. Ford they ain't red.

Need a quick eta? There it is, it's so simple and clean I want to show it off. And I have, most other drivers think I'm coo coo for Cocoa Puffs though. Until they see the rest of the app.

Ah, now that's what every driver needs, directions. Unfortunately, this app doesn't do commercial routing, so don't throw away your road atlas yet, driver.

Ah yes, gotta let your travel agent (dispatcher) know when you'll get there. Nice to be able to get it done kinda automagically, eh?

Dang it, there's gonna be rubberneckers. Better find a way around that if'n you want to not get stuck in traffic, how 'bout it?

If you don't keep your eyes on the road, them gators (tire tread laying on edge, looks like an alligators tail) will getcha. Nice to have a heads up before you get there.

I did have a major problem with this one, since my truck is castrated (governed, unable to go faster) at 65, this app did not perform very accurately. But it did just fine while in my four-wheeler. With a very smooth UI, and a, so far, soothing color scheme, I liked this one as soon as I got my mitts on it. A very enthusiastic 9 and a half gears, my only gripe is not having commercial routing as an option.

So if you have any kinda time critical drivin to do, pick BlackBerry Traffic up in the App World, and start gettin around on time for a change.

Hammerdown Monday is written and posted every other Monday, by ADPerdue, a genuine Long Haul Trucker with eight years on the road, recently certified as having over one million accident and ticket free miles, and a bona fide BlackBerry junkie. Apps are rated from one gear to ten gears, with one meaning "don't use this app even if they pay ya", and ten meaning "if you don't have this app yet, you need some serious head shrinkin".

I love knowing where the construction is while I'm planning my route. Helps me avoid delays, and keeps me from going stark ravin bonkers.

It's easy to use and works great. The only thing it needs now is voice.
