Thread: Changing OS from Verizon to any other carrier

Hi everybody:

I´m new to BlackBerry world but I´m an IT guy. I have a 9630 from Verizon that I need to change OS to any other since in Honduras where I live one company Tigo doesn´t support Verizons phones, the other networks they do. So I want to change the OS or install a patch or anything else necesary to make my smartphone works.

Am I right doing that or there is something else?

Why did they say they don't support Verizon phones?

As long as your Verizon phone is GSM capable, I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work outside the USA.

Let me see if I can get some others to comment on this.

Deleting the vendor.xml file before installing the OS takes care of any carrier 'locks'. Just follow the instructions in the tutorial, which is in the resource section if this forum, under How-To. I'm on my phone, so I can't provide any links, but maybe Joe could help you out with that

Thank you for your soon response. The phone is GSM/CDMA capable, but for some reasons it won´t work in their network unless I change the software and eliminate the Verizon software or features, or whatever it makes the phone recognize as Verizon. We have Claro and Digicel and it works with them full services , but not Tigo (Celtel)

I did installed the Sprint version and deleted the vendor.xml but still not working...

Should I try another carrier?

Did you change your network settings?

Click on Manage Connections icon... go to Mobile Network Options... make sure data services are on, and also mess around with the Network Technology settings. Make sure it is not set to 1XEV. Try setting it to GSM or Global.

Yes Joe, I did, I changed the setting even in the CDMA screen using ##000000 and change the number country code and network code but did not work, I even installed the last version leaked for OS but still not working. Is there a way to delete the whole operating system and restore another? I´m felling frustated. What does the vendor.xml does? I noticed in the last version it comes with this company TIGO included in the vendor.xml while in other versions don´t. I tried to restore the system without deleting that file but it doesn´t let me.

It has to be something since I´ve seen people here who does use the same model with that company. But I want to learn how to do it since they paid for that, it´s a mattter o know how to....thanks for helping.

OK, the vendor.xml file is the provider file that will marry the device to a certain carrier. by deleting that file before downloading the OS to the device will not include any extra carrier identifiers. At least, that's what I believe it does. It is not necessary when upgrading an OS.
Now, to answer your question regarding deleting the whole OS and starting from scratch is also a great idea. Go to this link All In One Guide - How To Upgrade Your Device - with Pictures & Videos and you will see the guide index. Post #3 describes and instructs in wiping the device and getting it ready for a clean OS install.
I believe that this will allow your device to become operational. Just don't forget to delete the vendor.xml file before downloading the OS to your device.

Ok here is what I did:

I upgraded to a OS version leaked by BerryCN OS 5.0.0.1041, but it didn´t work, but I noticed that in the vendor file was included that company TIGO, not sure if was for blocking or allow it, the xml file is not clear, lol.

Then I downgraded to a OS from CBeyond version 4.7.1 and change de CDMA screen to fit the network settings here, but still didn´t work.

So I went to Mobile network options and change the type for 1EXV and try to connect with no succes, then change it to Global and 3G&2G , still not working.

Finally went to host table there were no entries and then try to register and sent a message and says a message was sent, and got the EDGE at the top corner.

I don´t know what the solution was since I try a lot, but finally works.

that's great. Glad we could help, even though I'm not sure what it was that corrected the issue.

It would most likely be the Host Routing Table that fixed your issue. What that does is register your device on that wireless network.
