Thread: RIM VP Says QNX OS Will Replace BlackBerry Operating System

During a breakfast event at the BlackBerry Developers Conference, a RIM VP said that the QNX operating system that was shown on the BlackBerry Playbook will be finding its way on to future BlackBerry devices. During the conversation the next BlackBerry OS, BlackBerry 7 would be a stepping stone until a full switch could me made.

After seeing the video of the BlackBerry PlayBook in action, I am really getting excited to see what RIM can do with future devices. Whether BlackBerry 7 will be a stepping stone or not, I really want to see something fresh from RIM. We will have to wait and see what OS ends up on the LTE version of the BlackBerry Storm that is rumored to be out next year. I am hoping that it will be a killer device.

If RIM can blend a new OS with impressive hardware do you think they can push ahead of the competition?

this sounds too good to be true; whats the catch? other than the fact we have to wait for Blackberry 8 to see it.

their having problems giving people os 6 and fixing bugs within os 6 and their already talking about os 7 ? talking about putting they cart before the horse i myself think they need to fix the problems they have with phones and software before bringing out a new os

you're right that's how we get stuck with devices with so many bugs, trust me I think its a good move however not at the expense of the people. As a S2 user I have no idea what OS6 is like and from the sounds of this I may never know. If its a BB then we all need to share the same level of OS's

Don't mean to sound upset or anything its just getting old constantly seeing device after device being kicked to the curb because RIM refuse to fix bugs, so the answer is ALWAYS the release of something new. whatever

sorry guys but i'm all for releasing something new. what they have out right now is not worth fixing in my opinion. i vote get the OS functionality up to scratch first and then refine it.

i do however agree that the new OSes should b released for all currently supported products, i cant believe the hardware is that different seeing the device specs are near identical...but i could b wrong.

Uh oh, this is looking bad. The QNX OS reminds me of the PalmOS. On a tablet that's fine, however device wise, meh.

based on their write up, it should be a sound OS: QNX - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

it also appears to reach more developer communities with its links to Unix/NetBSD and Eclipse development stuff.

I am looking for some LOVE with regard to the S2. With less than nine months left on my contract I would very much like to continue and see support for the Storm platform. I don’t want to go back to a slide out, lift up, push over, clip on anything. I just want a solid working kicka….business and personal tool that is bug free and feature rich based on hardware and firmware capabilities.
With the holidays coming up and increased commercial exposure of competitive devices we need to see something HOT coming out from RIM. Stock pricing reflects the timing of these efforts. I can live with tethering my S2 to the new Playbook and wait for a robust solid S2 or whatever the new one is going to be. I don’t think people will be able to afford multiple new products hitting the street at the same time…. Or would they….

funny thing.... I still have my ORIGINAL S1, still works, still not getting much love from anyone except a few hybrids here and there.
I agree with a poster above, RIM really needs to stop kicking out more and more devices without repairing the issues of the previous devices. All this is accomplishing is making people shy away from the BlackBerry and turn to droids and Iphones.
If RIM were smart, they'd realize there is a loyal customer base out here, but turning their backs on us won't help their bottom line.
RIM is banking on the idea that people get bored with a device after a month or so and want something new. This is not always true and I'll tell you how I know this; I work on cars for a living and even though there are new ones coming out all the time, I still work on ones built in the 50's and 60's on a regular basis.
Truth be told, I'd rather spend my money on something that works, lasts and can still be used later if i want it to. I really don't like being forced to "upgrade" just because the manufacturer refuses to support their own product a month later.

That's exactly how I feel.

RIM knows that u suckers will still buy their product even though it will be shafted a year later. face it, although satisfaction ratings are down, devices are still selling so join the circus and start saving for the S3 or the S4 if u want this QNX thing.

This is great news. I'd happily dish out money for this. If its built as well as it sounds, and judging by the QNX specs and reputation, IT WILL! This technology is the iphone/android killer we've all been asking for.......for years. As for fixing the current and old device bugs-Im living with my 9530, and I'm still pretty content with it. I don't think they should spend much time fixing our old devices, its nice when we get an update or leak, but I'd much rather them just finally put out something solid. I really have faith in RIM taking this jump and I think we are all ready for it. As long as it runs as smooth as those videos they had playing at DevCon, I don't believe that was the actual device or OS at all........

I'm done waiting on new os's. I'm a 9550 user and feel like i got shafted with bbos6.

you did but fear not; when these QNX devices come out the shafting will most likely continue. so the new guys wont have anything on u for too long.

we can hope that with this new platform RIM would be more committed to keeping a wider range of their portfolio up to date; but to be honest the other OSes do drop products along the way as well. Granted they don't drop an entire generation(s) like Rim does but still a bit here and there. Actually RIM is better than Nokia and their Symbian line; they never upgrade to the next OS version, never.

How much longer can we wait till QNX makes it way to BB devices. Will it be on new devices models or more Refresh devices on the way? i dont mean to brag but Either way i do not care how much it costs with two paychecks i got myself a new blackberry. OS 6 seems impressive but that just something ill pass on. RIM Give us FANS Specs,prices, a date on this so called QNX based OS.

Still a long way to go..during our waiting period... they will use OS 6 manipulation before come out with QNX...

The real Storm 3 should have QNX OS on it. RIM has been working with QNX for a while so I say real soon the QNX OS will be on the newer devices moving forward. I'm still disappointed in RIM still releasing blackberries with OS 5!
