Thread: New RIM Browser LATE 2010?

Different reports are coming in stating RIM will be officially be releasing their new "Webkit" browser by the end of 2010. This differs drastically from the previous report/rumor of mid July. The new browser will bring "iPhone-like" web surfing to the BlackBerry platform, supporting AJAX, CSS, and HTML. However, at this time there is no confirmation of flash.

The first thing this brings to mind is whether it may be too little too late. RIM is already DESPERATELY behind in a consumer driven market with both the OS and the browser. What else will Apple, Google, or even Microsoft bring to the table in another nine months. Another nine months where RIM falls even further behind.

I've been trying to stick with RIM but it seems like they are try too hard too late. In the beginning Blackberry were design for the business person. Now days your phone should be able to handle anything you can throw at it since we've become mobile everything. The iPhone was made as an entertainment phone, so was most google devices. I would love to wait around for RIM to get it right, but like you said...9 months from now the things we find awesome about other device will be even more with added functionality. I'm pretty sure that I'll be moving to another device soon, hell the Nexus is right around the corner but who knows? Lol.

RIM BETTER release this new webkit browser before 2010! It should be released as originally stated this summer. And IT HAS TO HAVE FLASH! I know RIM can do it, they most certainly have the resources and the hardware can now definitely support it. Its just a matter of why don't they? And that is the billion dollar question... literally. I am not going to hold my breathe but hopefully we will all be pleasantly surprised, not only by an early release but by a flash supported web browser that knocks our socks off!!!

I will be highly disappointed if this is true. Been having blind faith that RIM will pull thru with this new browser, but way too many exciting new phones arriving before the end of 2010 to wait around that long. Hopefully it will arrive by middle of year. If not I don't think I can hold out.

Don't feel like you two are the Lone Ranger. There are many people that feel this way. I just hope this report is wrong.

I bet I have it by this summer... As for falling behind apple... Remember this: APPLE WILL NEVER HAVE "FLASH" but ? will with that new browser!

I cant believe that this report is true. Webkit was shown on a 9700 at recent Barcelona show, cant see how on earth it would take until the end of the year to get it up and running. Also with new BB Bold slider coming out this summer, reliable sources have reported that it will have OS 6.0 and webkit running.

If they delay webkit until end of year RIm will get screwwd.

I can only speak to me and how I am wired. I used a Windows based device a few years ago. It was incredibly slow and unreliable, so I moved to BlackBerry, and for the most part been happy. I don't think I would ever give Windows another try, once I feel that it has failed me, I don't think I'd ever go back no mater how wonderful they claim that they are. I would always have a bad taste in my mouth. I don't know how many other people are out there with the same mentality, but I hope this does not happen to RIM.

Its a dime late dollar short! I feel a number of people will be lured away to new releases by other manufacturers. Sorry RIM wake up and smell the competition!!!

Im a loyal BB man, but I'm quite disappointed with BB, the browser seems 10 years behind when compared to other devices, not only is slow is also not visually appealing, all in all if I were business heavy and had to rely heavily on a phone the BB would not be it. very often i find myself relying on the browser and it just SUCK! i will keep my BB but id be lying if i said I didnt look at other devices with high desire.

I say launch it today. Let the BlackBerry crowd test it, find its bugs of any, report back and have it official no later than the end of the year. At least get it in our hands and try to make faithful BB users happy. The last thing I want to see is an even more overdue browser launch be plagued with problems and then it takes well into 2011 to have it corrected. Give it to the masses right now.

Lack of decent browser and apps and games is making really hard to stick with BB. If there is no real resolution in these areas, I'll be looking into something else when my contract is up for renewal

i agree with the masses here. while blackberries hold a ton of potential it falls short in many areas with the browser leading the way. and with a slew of highly touted smartphones coming out this year and the way that blackberry is handling the release of the browser i fear we might start seeing a mass exodus of bb users. i have only had a blackberry device for a little over a year now i am already getting weary of how things evolve. i know all the different platforms have their short comings, but hasn't the browser been a sore spot for bb users for sometime now?

I think that so many things has been said about it... but we still are forgetting 2 important things: Mobile designed pages and services and mobile browsing experience.

The first one takes not only RIM devices users but ANY mobile device that browse to the question: do we need better mobile browsers or better mobile services?? as long as technology keeps mobile devices in lower perfomance than pc's, going to the mobile serevices issue could give more benefits rather than focusing on devices, that obviously, with the constant neccessary devices development.

The second thing, the user experience is hardly marked by Iphone's experience... not for granted apple enhaced the experience with the ipad. I'm a 9700 user, and no matter how better the webkit get, i can imagine myself browsing with my finger on the trackpad on a small screen.

Speed browsing is a not a goal per se, it's a browsing experience enhacer and please, never forget, our devices are the intermediary between the service and our need.

Some are talking about the fiscal year 2010 - claiming it would end in Feb...and therefore, the new browser should be due shortly... hey guys if I am not wrong Feb 2010 is the end of the fiscal year 2009 - so be prepared for a long wait. RIM's just acquired a comp. being able to give them a new browser...but even they need some time... boy, I do hope, that I am completely wrong!!!

I sure hope this is untrue and that a webkit browser is just around the corner. I really like my Storm, even on At&t, and am now out of contract. You know that itch the starts when you'd like a new phone, well its started and I've been holding off on scratching that itch for a while now. At present I jump to Opera Mini to browse, but if RIM doesn't or can't get a better browser out soon (read by summer or before Sprint launches the Supersonic with wifi 4g), I might just jump on the Android band wagon. I've played with a couple of HTC Android phones and I wanna tell you, they're pretty darn nice devices.

Beating the iPhone Safari browser is a publicity game. 99% of the time I can acces the sites I need to using the 5.0+ browser from RIM. We don't need a desktop experience on your smart phone, we need better mobile webs sites!

If this is true then bye bye RIM and hello Google. I am tired of needing to check a simple site on the web and having to wait so long for the page to render. Add to the fact that most every BlackBerry app costs money even for the simple things. They don't produce consumer phones... They produce what they know, which isn't even business any longer. I think they decided that their phones sell well enough so why innovate the software. Let's just release 5+ models the same year and see how that goes. Ridiculous. If the new browser is not up when I can get a new phone (July or August) I will be leaving.

I really hope this is true. I have had to jump from Bolt to Opera to the built in browser just to accomplish tasks that should have used one browser.
This has been one of the real weakpoints of Blackberry devices in the past and I am looking forward to it getting fixed.
