State Of The BlackBerry - Marketshare

With as many concerns as our members (and staff) have regarding the current "State Of The BlackBerry", it's good to see signs of improvement. Gartner has released the latest "breakdown of OS Marketshare" which shows RIM with a 3.3 point gain (up to nearly 20%). Symbian obviously continues to be the market leader with 47% of the Mobile OS market in its corner. However, the Symbian OS is archaic at best when compared to the features offered among newer BlackBerry, Android, and even Windows Mobile devices. Apple continues their climb up the charts claiming 14% of the pie.

The real question is will RIM continue to gain market share over the aging Symbian OS, or will Apple soon overtake them both? One thing to keep in mind is that carriers are going to begin putting numerous constraints on device manufacturers regarding their use of bandwidth. According to recent reports, it takes more than four BlackBerry's to exceed the bandwidth use of merely one iPhone. This has nothing to do with the device's inherent capabilities. It has everything to do with the way RIM handles data. Even the new WebKit browser is being touted as more efficient than Apple's mobile browser.

RIM has come a long way since I sported my 7520; originally it didn't have a native HTML browser! Adding video and music, especially with the 3.5 mm jack helped. Now if they beef up the browser, optimize/sexify some of their native apps like Music Player, Facebook, etc. over the next couple years the iPhone will start losing their popularity.

With the Curve as the #1 smart phone seller and RIM carrying the majority of the too 10... I don't think they are going anywhere soon! Rims statements at the Barcelona conference were all about conservation. With the recent rumors of carrier fees to increase for these huge data eaters... Rim stepped up to the plate to show everyone why they are the big dog. The new web kit uses 40% of the bandwidth that the iphones browser does and is supposed to be a better browser with more capabilities in the future. They were sure to point out the conservation as to poke a big stick at the competition.

Now me as a consumer am glad that I have a device that will be at the bottom of a list for once... The list that carriers decide to jack the data plan on!!!!


Now you as a consumer... Which device do you pick??? Which device do you think the majority will pick??? Who will be on top then???

My opinion...Apple will eventually overtake RIM. But only if the exclusivity is dropped and Big red can get it in their lineup. Even so, I really think that RIM will catch up in the OS race. They know they have to raise the bar. The WebKit browser will just be the start. I am confident that RIM will make OS 6 a much better OS than we are expecting. Of course if they don't, RIM could be the next Palm and be scratching and clawing to stay alive.

The iphone is a power house and in my opinion will continue to grow, but the popularity will level out. How can it really change, except for internal changes and the average person won't see that stuff or really care. Where as BB's have a variety to offer the everyday person. They continue to develop new phones externally and improve things under the hood too. RIM will grow as well but maybe a slow and steady pace. Now that's just my thought and I know nothing about marketshares.

Rim has come a long way, but they are going to have to step it up a bit in the near future, as there is so much on the horizon.
