We could all wish for a different name, but if it looks like a Storm, they will call it a Storm.

I've got a good name.... the Blackberry Eclipse! It shuns out the sun, so no one can see the "Storm". LOL!

    yeah, that was pretty sad!!

to me a Storm is a completely touchscreen device. IMHO, i think they should release both versions of the prototype as two different devices. this way people can choose what they want. That is just my 2 cents though...

Your "2 cents" makes a whole lot of sense...I couldn't agree with you more..Kinda like when a device is released w/or w/out a camera....

    Hands on impression of S3

The rumors have been churning and low and behold the Storm 3 is a real device. I only had about 5 minutes with the device yesterday and I could not take pictures or notes. There is also some information I cannot state as to protect the innocent.

The first thing I noticed about the Storm 3 is how much thinner it is then the 9550. Think iPhone thin. It also felt considerably lighter but I did not have enough time to break out my triple beam. There were reports from bbleaks that the boot up time was much faster and indeed it is. I counted to myself and it was 20 seconds from the time I pressed the on button to being fully powered up. Let me discuss the screen for a moment. It is the best screen I have ever seen. The color and resolution is fantastic. Compared to the Moto Droid sitting next to it, blew it out of the water. The UI is different. I cannot get into specifics, but Storm 3 does widgets

Something else I noticed was the speed of processor. I don't know what is under the hood but it was smoking fast even with the beta OS being used. It beat the Droid on every task I threw at it. Hands down the fastest phone I have used.

Now here is where it got cool. Adobe flash was incorporated into the browser and I have to say I was super impressed. Compared to mobile safari, this is better. Full desktop quality rendering of pages. While it looked better pages rendered slightly faster on the iPhone 3GS but faster than the Moto Droid. Another nice addition is tabbed browsing. It is implemented very cleanly into the browser UI.

The camera has been upgraded and is rocking a 6MP beauty. Photos I took on it were fantastic. Available RAM has been increased to 512mb, a nice bump for sure. I wasn't able to see what the SD card was so I have no idea there.

IMO this phone outperforms the Droid in all areas except for available apps (BB APP World is still very small). There were no games installed so I couldn't determine how well this phone performed from a gaming standpoint. Maybe on Round 2 I will be more lucky.

Just when I was about ready to give up on RIM, I am pleased to see the huge strides they have made not only from a hardware but also software perspective.

P.S. Rumors of this having a slider are completely false. There are and were never any plans on combining this phone with a slide-out Qwerty.

Update: I got a few more minutes with the device today so a few extra things of note.

    1. The version of the ever popular google maps with turn by turn voice navigation was loaded and worked beautifully.
    2. The phone is 4G compatible
    3. Internally the phone is known as S3-i1 however a newer prototype to be finished shortly will be dubbed S3-d5.
    4. RIM is trying to finalize the software and hardware so it can makes it's public debut during WES, April 2010
    5. The phone will be released this year and is being marketed to compete directly against the Android.
    6. The model number for the S3 = 958*

    Hands off reply

If I would not know better, this droids errrrr looks so familiar, but is quite the opposite of my experience. What I had in hand was definitely a slider

sure, if one wants a device thinner than the current storm 1 and 2 but still the same type of touchscreen, with the full glass cover, I think it is a no-brainer, that the s3 will not be a slider. Nevertheless, would be still nice to have that option and get some of the designs, RIM claims in the patent application. On the other hand, what's the likelyhood of these claims being granted...the designs look so close to nokia's communicator and others...

We'll see, when it's there. Talking about s3 I of course also would say: faster, thinner, more memory, better performance, ... :cool2:

Hmmmm - wonder if an OS leak could benefit the S1 and S2 out here....Or is the OS too radically different or requiring more advanced hardware, memory, ......

I'm not sure one way I say yes as the java would be useable but as of late with new leaks the newer java is not backwards compatible with the older sfi's so I am really unsure.. why you have one?? lol

    Only in my dreams.........

This peak into the future is enough to calm my urge to try out the droids that are out now or to be released over the next few months....Other then the browser, happy with my 9530 on .419. Does what I need to to do. Did any more and I would be playing too much to get my work done......

To JLevy - thanks for the comprehensive preview based on your hands-on time!! S3 looks to be my next device...and I can put my curiosity and "grass is greener on the other side" wanderlust for Android devices to rest (yeah right!). A couple of questions, though - and I realize the responses will be purely conjecture:

    1. If S3 is going to be marketed to directly compete against the Droid, will Verizon get S3 from the beginning?? I sure hope so, but it seems like VZW has a current cash cow in the Droid, and I can see them not jumping on the Storm 3 bandwagon initially. That would be sad news for us S1 survivors!

    2. You said you had no chance to take pictures...yet you commented on the great pics with the 6 megapixel camera?? Maybe you had a chance the second time you had the device. (not doubting you, just want to know more!)

    3. The browser improvements sound great! Do you think any of this will be pushed out for the Storm 1 & 2 prior to S3's release? Is the browser a completely different app than the current miserable BBBrowser...or just an incremental improvement?

    4. What's the screen size and resolution? I'm hoping for something a tad bit bigger than 3.25" (S1 & S2) - maybe around 3.5 or 3.6"? My old eyes struggle more each year (which means each phone I get has to have a bigger screen than the last!).

    5. Can you comment on the Sure-Type touchscreen typing? I actually prefer the 'clicks' of Storm 1... I wonder what the S3 will have?

Thanks for sharing this great info. RIM may have kept another customer based on the "promise" of Storm 3. I just hope Verizon picks it up from Day 1!!

I hate to conjecture as this can often lead to false rumors being spread. So I will comment on your questions where I can. Certain questions I will not be able to answer either because I do not know or to protect the innocent.

    1. I honestly have no idea what the marketing campaign will consist of. What I can say is that one of the customers for this phone will be VZW.

    2. Sorry for the misunderstanding. What I meant is that I was not allowed to take pictures of the S3. I was only allowed to look and give it a test drive. That included taking pictures with the S3 to gauge how good the new 6mp camera was.

    3. The browser is 100% different than the current BB browser. You won't even recognize when you see it. As far as S1 and S2 are concerned I am not at liberty to say.

    4. I didn't get into screen resolution specs but from a subjective point of view it looked better to me than the Moto Droid. I watched a you tube video and all I can say is wow. Screen size, to be honest, didn't seem any larger than the S2. It was something I really focused on because some of the other improvements blew me away. If I am lucky enough to see it again I will take better note of this.

    5. This question I can't really address. This is to protect the innocent. What I can say is there is debate internally as to whether or not S3 will have sure-press. One of the options on the plate is to remove sure-press but no decision has been made either way.

JLevy - thanks for your thorough responses again. I'd say you replied to the best of your knowledge and ability...and it's much appreciated! I just hope the timeline of being rolled out after WES in April 2010 stays true. Thanks again!
